Job Description

As a Data Engineer at Ookla, you will be developing tools and libraries to support data scientists and analysts in discovering new ways to apply data. You will be working on big data using the latest technologies. The role involves developing high-volume data processing jobs across various platforms like Redshift, Athena, Iceberg, Spark, and Airflow. You'll collaborate with Data Scientists to turn methodology into products, identify bottlenecks, and make recommendations for improving efficiency. Supporting and collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and product managers will be key aspects of the job. We’re looking for a data engineer to join the Ookla Data Engineering team and help us process the world’s best collection of data on mobile and fixed internet performance. As a data engineer you will be focused on developing tools, libraries and operations to support data scientists and analysts as they discover new and exciting ways to apply our data. Applicants should have a strong, data-focused programming background and be passionate about accuracy and performance. You will work on big data using the latest technologies.

Expectations for Success  
  • Develop high volume data processing jobs across various platforms including Redshift, Athena, Iceberg, Spark and Airflow   
  • Work closely with Data Scientists to turn theory and methodology into viable products   
  • Identify bottlenecks in system performance and make recommendations on improving process efficiency   
  • Support and collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and product managers   
   
Requirements  
 
We are looking for the right person, not the exact list of requirements. If you believe your life experience has prepared you for similar challenges, we’d like to hear from you.   
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience   
  • Strong understanding of programming concepts with experience in at least 1 OOP language (Python, Scala, Java)   
  • Strong background and 3+ years of direct experience working with Python   
  • Experience with high volume distributed data processing in Spark   
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL, databases (MySQL / Redshift / Athena / Trino), data modeling, and modern data warehouse (lakehouse) management   
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analysis skills   
  • Excited to learn and work with new technologies in a dynamic environment   
  • Strong communication skills both in person and via virtual mediums   
  • Strong time management skills and a self driven work ethic   
  • Experience with AWS cloud services is a plus   
  • Experience with event driven architecture and streaming data pipelines is a plus

As required by applicable Pay Transparency laws, Ookla provides a range for the base pay. Factors that may be used to determine your actual pay may include your specific job related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location. The base pay for this position ranges from $145,000 /year up to $160,000/year.
