The Principal Software Engineer Lead at Microsoft's ISE team will work directly with customers to build innovative, cloud-based solutions using modern software engineering practices. This involves designing, implementing, and delivering large-scale, distributed systems. The role requires strong leadership, mentoring a team of 5-7 engineers, collaborating across teams and company boundaries, and contributing to open source projects. Responsibilities include understanding user requirements, designing and coding solutions, ensuring reliability and supportability, and fostering engineering excellence. The ideal candidate possesses strong experience in cloud technologies, Generative AI, and people management, along with a proven track record of delivering high-impact solutions.

The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team is a global engineering organization that works directly with customers looking to leverage the latest technologies to address their toughest challenges. We work closely with our customers’ engineers to jointly develop code for cloud-based solutions that can accelerate their organization. We work in collaboration with Microsoft product teams, partners, and open-source communities to empower our customers to do more with the cloud. We pride ourselves in making contributions to open source and making our platforms easier to use.

We develop solutions side-by-side with our customers through collaborative innovation to solve their challenges. This work involves the development of broadly applicable, high-impact solution patterns and open-source software assets that contribute to the Microsoft platform. In this role, you will be working with engineers from your team and our customers’ teams to apply your skills, perspectives, and creativity to grow as engineers and help solve our customers’ toughest challenges.

We are hiring a Principal Software Engineer Lead with deep experience and expertise in designing and delivering solutions using modern software engineering practices and cloud technologies. You will be working side-by-side with high-impact and strategic customers and their engineers to build innovative solutions. Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience experience building cloud based solutions
  • Experience managing and leading other software engineers
  • Experience investigating customer requirements and translating those to a solution architecture

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 4+ years people management experience.
  • Experience building solutions with Generative AI technologies
  • Solid design and coding skills with a bias for architecture at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and collaborate across company boundaries
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, AWS, or similar cloud computing platforms
  • Experience building Generative AI solutions
  • Strong service delivery experience including architecture, coding, and building online services
  • Experience leading geographically dispersed, diverse, and virtual teams

 

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

  • Leads and coaches others in designing, testing, and securing solutions for products/solutions.
  • Working hands-on with your team and our customers from design through implementation of large-scale distributed systems, setting examples for good engineering practices and coding along the way.

 

Coding

  • Leads and coaches team members in code quality, debugging, and performance improvement.

 

Implement

  • Coaches team on project management, experimentation, and deployment across products.

 

Reliability and Supportability

  • Coaches others on live service operations, issue resolution, and telemetry data analysis for system performance and functionality.

 

Engineering Excellence

  • Continuously building your technical knowledge and improving our ability to deliver quality solutions by evolving our engineering process and technical capabilities.
  • Coaches others on developing and using tools, automation, and compliance for a product.
