Job Description

As a Software Engineering Manager at Google Nest, you'll lead and mentor a team of engineers, overseeing major projects related to smart home technology. Responsibilities include building reliable integration test frameworks, developing interoperability frameworks for Google devices, writing performance measurement tools, and developing AI-based automation tools. You'll define test and development strategies, set team priorities, and align them with broader organizational goals. The role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and experience managing large-scale projects across multiple teams and locations. The team focuses on innovating and extending boundaries across devices, surfaces, apps, and ecosystems, building tooling, scalable test infrastructure, and driving quality insights into the development process. The Google Home team focuses on hardware, software, and services offerings for the home, ranging from thermostats to smart displays.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or related field
  • 8+ years software development experience (Python/Java)
  • 3+ years technical leadership, 2+ years people management
  • Build reliable integration test frameworks
  • Develop interoperability frameworks
  • Develop AI-based automation tools
Good to have:
  • Master's or PhD in Engineering/CS
  • Experience with infrastructure development or test automation
  • Experience defining multi-quarter team roadmaps
  • Knowledge of software test cycle phases

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages: Python or Java.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience leading teams in general software development, infrastructure development or test automation tooling.
  • Experience defining multi-quarter team delivery roadmaps, managing constraints, and prioritizing interests.
  • Knowledge of the phases and activities of a software test cycle.
  • Ability to grow and develop individuals, teams and leads and align that growth with the wider needs of the business.
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills, with experience partnering and engaging with software development peers.

The Home team researches, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make users’ homes more helpful. Responsibilities

  • Build reliable integration test frameworks for services, virtual device emulator technology in the connected device domain, developing interoperability frameworks to ensure that ecosystems of Google device software, back-end, and apps work.
  • Write the tools that measure and give insight on performance issues in systems.
  • Develop Generative AI based tools for automation generation, log analysis, and triage to speed up developer workflows.
  • Define test and development.
  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals, and align strategy and processes across teams.
