Job Description

Google's JAX 3P team, part of Google Cloud's Core ML organization, seeks a Staff Software Engineer to develop core infrastructure for the next generation of machine learning. This role involves optimizing JAX ecosystem libraries for foundation model training, tuning, adaptation, and inference across accelerators. Close collaboration with Google DeepMind's JAX Core team is essential. Responsibilities include developing distributed training techniques, working with diverse systems (Python to C++), and authoring documentation. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in software development, ML design, and infrastructure optimization, with a strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software architecture. The position focuses on pushing performance and scalability boundaries, impacting the global AI community and Google's AI leadership.

Must have:

8+ years software development experience
5+ years experience testing and launching software products
5+ years leading ML design and optimizing ML infrastructure
Experience with data structures/algorithms
Software design/architecture experience

Good to have:

Master's degree or PhD
Experience in a technical leadership role
Experience with compilers, performance engineering, or API design
Knowledge of latest AI models, tools, and techniques

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
5 years of experience testing and launching software products, 3 years of experience with software design/architecture.
5 years of experience leading ML design and optimizing ML infrastructure (model deployment and evaluation, data processing, debugging, fine-tuning, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a technical related field.
3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
Experience with compilers, performance engineering, or designing clean and composable APIs, with a thoughtfulness about the end-to-end user experience.
Interest in keeping up-to-date on the latest AI models, tools, and techniques.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $189,000-$284,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

Develop and optimize the JAX ecosystem libraries for foundation model training, tuning, adaptation, and inference across different accelerators.
Collaborate closely with partner teams, especially Google DeepMind's JAX Core team.
Develop and implement cutting-edge distributed training and parallelism techniques to enable efficient and scalable training of large-scale machine learning models.
Dive into stack-spanning systems and tools, from high-level Python to low-level C++.
Author documentation and guides to facilitate seamless onboarding into the broader ecosystem.
