This Technical Writer role at Google focuses on creating clear and concise documentation for Google Cloud Foundation Services. Responsibilities include leading user experience and information architecture, developing conceptual documentation and how-to guides, working with engineering and product management to document new features, and communicating with Cloud customers through various online materials. The role involves managing projects and coordinating junior writers, requiring experience in writing for technical audiences, web writing, and familiarity with tools like Markdown, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of creating effective documentation for developers and dev-ops, and possess strong communication skills to bridge the gap between developers, marketing, and external users.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years experience creating technical content
  • Web writing experience (Markdown, HTML, CSS, JS)
  • Lead UX, information architecture
  • Document new features with engineering
Good to have:
  • REST-based technologies experience
  • Copy editing and assisting non-writers
  • API management, Cloud, SDLC familiarity
  • Designing information architecture for large content sets

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience creating content for technical audiences (e.g., developer documentation, Computer Science course material, or IT administration playbooks).
  • Experience writing for the web and with Markdown, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with REST-based technologies (e.g., HTTP, JSON, XML, YAML).
  • Experience assisting non-writers with developmental and copy editing.
  • Familiarity with API management, Cloud, Cloud/Hybrid, Multi-Cloud, or Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) technologies and practices.
  • Proven track record of researching and writing effective documentation for developers and dev-ops.
  • Ability to design information architecture for moderate to large content sets.

Technical writers communicate complex information clearly, concisely and accurately, and without relying on jargon. As a technical writer, your role involves tasks such as writing conceptual overviews and procedures, reading and writing example code, or updating help center queries and FAQs. Technical writers play a big part at Google. They are a key link between developers, marketing associates, developer advocates, as well as all the external users and developers, tying together many vital but disparate parts of the Google ecosystem.

You develop complex, in-depth communications for internal and external audiences and manage projects that involve coordinating multiple junior writers.
