This training program aims to provide basic instruction to ship's deck officers who operate in Polar Waters, adhering to STCW A-V/4-1 and Model Course 7.11. It is specifically designed for crews on icebreaking vessels. The content covers regulations, ice characteristics, detection, classification, vessel behavior in ice, navigation, voyage management, icebreaker assistance, crew preparation, working conditions, safety, and environmental protection. Practical, simulation-based exercises include interpreting ice charts and satellite images, estimating vessel capabilities in ice, approaching ice edges, navigating through various ice conditions, following an icebreaker, and turning in ice. The total duration is 34 hours, comprising 24.5 hours of theory (in-person or eLearning) and 9.5 hours of practical training, including simulations and table-top exercises. The training is valid for five years.
Must have:
  • Basic training for ship's deck officers
  • Experience in Polar Waters
  • Knowledge of STCW A-V/4-1
  • Familiarity with Model Course 7.11
  • Completion of simulation-based exercises
Good to have:
  • Optimized for crews on icebreaking vessels

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this training program is to provide basic training to ship’s deck officers operating in Polar Waters in accordance with STCW A-V/4-1 and Model Course 7.11.   This course is optimized for crews serving onboard icebreaking vessels.

CONTENT

  • Regulations and Standards

  • Ice Characteristics, Detection and Classification

  • Vessel Characteristics in Ice including Impacts of Low Air Temperatures

  • Navigating in Ice

  • Voyage Management and Icebreaker Assistance

  • Crew Preparation, Working Conditions and Safety

  • Environmental Protection

The simulation-based practical training exercises included are as follows: 

  • Interpreting Ice Charts and Satellite Images

  • Estimating Vessel Capabilities in Ice

  • Approaching an Ice Edge

  • Navigating through Open Drift and Closed Pack Ice

  • Following an Icebreaker

  • Turning in Ice

DURATION:

  • 34 hours

  • 24 ½  hours theory (in-person or eLearning)

  • 9 ½ hours practical (including simulation and table-top exercises)

TRAINING LOCATION: Canada - 47 Bremigen’s Blvd, Paradise, NL or On-Site

VALIDITY: Five (5) Years
