About the Brand
We are currently seeking an Associate Editor with experience in research to join Communications AI & Computing - a new multidisciplinary open access journal in the Nature Portfolio.
The journal will publish research spanning the broad landscape of computational science, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and their applications in addressing complex scientific and societal challenges, encompassing both fundamental and applied research, from the development of algorithms, tools, and frameworks that advance scientific discovery to methodologies that utilise computational approaches to generate insights and solve real-world problems. The journal will initially be run jointly with Nature Communications, with a combined internal team and a joint Chief Editor, but with a separate Editorial Board. Communications AI & Computing complements our other Nature Portfolio open access titles, such as Nature Communications, the other Communications series journals, Scientific Reports as well as the suite of NPJs.
The Associate Editor will be responsible for assessing the novelty and importance of manuscripts and preparing them for publication. You will also promote the journal’s coverage of all fields relevant to computational science, with a particular focus on theoretical and foundational AI/ML. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in computer science, statistics, or information engineering, with an emphasis on learning theory, optimization, or model evaluation, and have research experience applying these methods in domains such as biology, chemistry, or related scientific disciplines.
The position is offered on a full-time basis (starting as soon as possible) and will be based in our editorial hub in Pune (with a hybrid working model).
If you love science, are passionate about communication of science, and enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research, you could be the person we are looking for to join the editorial team of Communications AI & Computing.
Role Responsibilities:
• Selection of manuscripts for publication in the journal based on the advance they bring over the published literature, with the appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its editorial policy
• Make those manuscripts selected for publication accessible to a wide readership, by giving attention to their titles and introductory sections, particularly the abstract, and by suggesting to the authors any structural changes that are needed.
• Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to production in an appropriate, complete state.
• Recommend appropriate manuscripts to the Chief Editor or Deputy Editor for journal press releases and write press release drafts.
• Recruit, train, support and keep engaged a team of external editors, ensuring that they understand and implement the ethos and policies of the journal
• Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions (in agreement with the Chief Editor) and report on these activities.
• Advise Advertising and Marketing as required, answering questions raised and offering suggestions/leads wherever possible.
• Devise and supply editorial content for special projects as agreed with the Chief and Deputy Editors.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
• Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in one or more disciplines that fall within sciences pertaining to computational science, ideally with a focus on theoretical and foundational AI/ML applied to biology, chemistry, or related scientific disciplines.
• Editorial experience, postdoctoral experience and broad training will be an advantage.
• A passion for science and a desire to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your speciality.
• The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different disciplines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
• A desire to meet scientists worldwide, online and in person, and to learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
Applicants should include
a CV (including a brief account of their research and other relevant experience)
a 150-word outline of an exciting development in computational science research; please be as specific as possible, for example referring to a recent scientific publication or news media article (please do not use AI to enhance your writing).
and a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the post and their salary expectations.
Eligibility
In accordance with our internal career movement guidance, 12 months in current role is a requirement before applying to a new role.
