Mob Entertainment seeks a contract Level Designer proficient in Unreal Engine and Tiled for its next game release. This mid-to-senior level role requires expertise in top-down, retro-style level design, gameplay flow, and player experience. Responsibilities include designing and implementing 2D levels, utilizing Unreal Engine and Tiled, implementing minor scripting, collaborating with other disciplines, iterating based on feedback, and optimizing for performance. The ideal candidate will have a strong portfolio showcasing their skills in action, adventure, or Metroidvania-style game level design, along with experience in tile-based design, scripting (Blueprints), and understanding of player experience and challenge balancing.

Mob Entertainment is a startup multimedia studio that is best known for our hit indie horror game "Poppy Playtime".  This franchise is one of the hottest new properties in gaming, and our team is naturally expanding as our ambition expands.  To give a taste of our brand's popularity, more than 100 billion YouTube views of Poppy Playtime related content have occured since the game's launch 4 years ago. 

 

Mob Entertainment is seeking a Level Designer with experience in both Unreal Engine and Tiled to join our team on a contract basis for our next release. This role is ideal for a highly skilled mid-to-senior-level level designer with a strong understanding of top-down, retro-style level design, gameplay flow, and player experience.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working in Unreal Engine and Tiled, have the ability to script minor gameplay logic, and be experienced in designing engaging, systemic, and readable 2D levels that balance exploration, combat, and pacing.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement top-down 2D levels that align with the game’s gameplay, aesthetic, and pacing goals.

  • Work in Unreal Engine and Tiled to create, iterate, and refine level layouts.

  • Implement minor scripting and event triggers using Blueprints or light scripting tools to support gameplay interactions.

  • Collaborate with game designers, artists, and engineers to ensure level designs support mechanics, AI behavior, and player experience.

  • Iterate on level designs based on playtesting, feedback, and balancing needs.

  • Ensure levels align with systemic design principles, allowing for replayability and dynamic gameplay variations.

  • Optimize levels for performance, readability, and accessibility while maintaining visual and mechanical clarity.

  • Maintain clean, well-documented level files and technical guidelines for cross-discipline collaboration.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine and Tiled, with experience designing top-down levels for retro-inspired games.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing level design work, including map layouts, gameplay pacing, and player progression.

  • Experience designing levels for action, adventure, or Metroidvania-style games.

  • Familiarity with tile-based level design, including collision mapping, environmental storytelling, and visual composition.

  • Ability to script minor gameplay interactions, such as triggers, doors, moving platforms, enemy spawns, and puzzle elements using Unreal Blueprints or similar tools.

  • Strong sense of player experience, challenge balancing, and game flow.

  • Experience working with game designers and artists to ensure levels align with the game’s mechanics, art direction, and technical constraints.

  • Comfortable taking feedback and iterating to refine level designs based on testing and team collaboration.

  • Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of level quality.

Pluses:

  • Experience working on commercial or indie 2D action-adventure games.

  • Familiarity with procedural generation techniques or modular level design.

  • Understanding of lighting, visibility, and player guidance techniques in 2D top-down games.

  • Passion for retro gaming and an understanding of classic level design philosophies.

Performance Expectations:

  • Deliver readable, engaging, and well-balanced levels that align with the game’s mechanics and pacing.

  • Communicate progress, challenges, and design choices effectively with the team.

  • Maintain technical efficiency in levels, ensuring smooth integration with game systems.

  • Iterate based on testing and feedback, refining levels to enhance player experience.
