As a Hard-Surface Environment Artist, you will be creating and guiding the creation of high-quality environment art for Forza Horizon. You'll be responsible for creating game-ready buildings and props, providing clear instructions and feedback to external vendors, and refining assets. You'll need to collaborate with leads, directors, and stakeholders to meet gameplay needs and ensure assets are bug-free. The role requires excellent teamwork and communication skills, along with a passion for the artistic and technical vision of the franchise.
Must have:
  • Hard-surface modeling skills in 3Ds Max or equivalent.
  • Exceptional skills in creating photo-realistic textures.
  • Strong understanding of real-world reference.
  • Outstanding prop creation skills for real-time game engine.
Good to have:
  • Experience with Adobe Substance 3D Designer.
  • Portfolio demonstrating structural assets.
  • Understanding of optimizing memory and performance.
  • Knowledge of photogrammetry and color correction workflows.

Playground Games is looking for a Hard-Surface Environment Artist to join our talented Forza Horizon team here in Leamington Spa.

ABOUT THE ROLE: 

As a Hard-Surface Environment Artist, you will be working within the Playground Games Environment Art Team and with external partners to deliver the content required for creating the immersive environment of Forza Horizon.  You will be responsible for creating, and guiding the creation of, consistently high-quality environment art and raising the bar for content in our game. You'll work closely with internal and external stakeholders, so communicating effectively is essential.  

Our ideal candidate is an extraordinary Environment Artist who is passionate about their craft, skilled with the tools of the trade and has the track record to prove it.  

This role is based in our state-of-the-art studio in Leamington Spa, with a hybrid work model.  Relocation assistance is available if required.

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

  • Work closely with Leads, Directors, and multi-disciplinary stakeholders to create, and guide the creation of, visually stunning environments that meet gameplay needs.
  • Work with your team to author game ready Buildings and Props that will define artistic benchmarks, workflows, documentation, and final game content.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions and feedback to external vendors on assets to ensure they meet the studio's quality standards, technical requirements, and artistic vision, guiding the vendors through any technical or artistic issues that arise during production.
  • Refine assets in 3Ds Max, the Adobe Substance Suite and other DCC software when required, integrating them into engine so they are bug free.  

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  •  Hard-surface modelling skills in 3Ds Max or equivalent software such as Maya or Blender. ZBrush experience desirable.  
  • Exceptional skills in creating your own photo-realistic textures in Adobe Substance 3D Painter.
  • Adobe Substance 3D Designer experience is preferred. 
  • Strong understanding of the use of real-world reference.
  • Outstanding prop creation skills and knowledge for a real-time game engine or real-time renderers.
  • A portfolio demonstrating the creation of structural assets like buildings is desirable.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A passion for communicating the artistic and technical vision of the Forza Horizon franchise.
  • An understanding and experience of optimising memory and performance for hard-surface assets within game engines is preferred.
  • Knowledge of photogrammetry and colour correction workflows is preferred.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills. Ability to manage tasks, meet deadlines, proactively address work-related issues, and a passion for learning and evolving as a professional.
