Job Description

The Head of Resources is responsible for managing the flow of information between Production, Talent Acquisition, and the crew. They ensure skilled talent is available to complete work at the highest quality. They act as a strategic advisor and mentor, and collaborate to enhance the employee experience. They must ensure productions are staffed, supported, and set up for success. Responsibilities include overseeing talent allocation, managing a team, supporting production, strategic planning, improving processes, and supervising crewing.
Must have:
  • 7+ years in a leadership role in VFX or animation.
  • Strong background in resource management and production coordination.
  • Experience in feature films and television series.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard tools and processes.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.

Job Details

Key Purpose of the Job:

The Head of Resources is the key conduit for information flow between Production, Talent Acquisition and the crew. They, with their Department Managers, ensure there is appropriate skilled talent available to complete the work at the highest quality. Beyond crewing, they will act as a strategic advisor and mentor to the resource management team, and collaborate with the Feature Animation Operations Manager to enhance the employee experience across the full lifecycle—from recruitment and onboarding, through career growth, to eventual offboarding.Together with the Operations Manager and Core Leadership Team, they will need help ensure the productions are staffed, supported, and set up for long-term success—on time, on budget, and at the highest creative standard.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resource Management: Oversee the allocation and forecasting of talent across multiple productions, ensuring a balanced mix of skill levels and experience.
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of Department Resource Managers, collaborating with HR and Learning & Development to guide career progression and performance management.
  • Production Support: Act as the primary liaison between production teams and talent acquisition, mediating conflicts and ensuring resource needs are met efficiently.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategies for talent retention, succession planning, and compensation in alignment with studio goals.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and recommend improvements to workflow, scheduling, and cross-department communication to enhance efficiency and collaboration.
  • Supervision Crewing: Work with Resource Managers to identify and plan for key supervision roles, ensuring leadership positions are filled for both confirmed and potential productions.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years in a leadership role within the VFX or animation industry, with a strong background in resource management and production coordination. Minimum 2 years as a Head of Resource in the VFX industry for a Global Studio.
  • Industry Knowledge: Extensive experience working on feature films and television series, with a deep understanding of the CG production process from both artistic and operational perspectives.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and motivate teams, with experience in performance management and career development.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with producers, supervisors, and studio leadership.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with industry-standard tools and processes for client/vendor delivery.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: a bachelor degree is required in this posting in a relevant field (e.g., Animation, Film Production, or a related discipline - HR).

Additional information:

  • Location of work:  149 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Y 4A6, eligible to work remotely per company policies
  • The base salary range for this full-time position is $130,000 to $140,000. DNEG salary ranges are determined by function, department, level and location. An individual's pay within a given range is determined by their transferrable or job-related skills and work experience. Salary ranges are modified from time to time based on external market data collected through our third-party surveys.
