The Manager / Counsel - Music Business & Legal Affairs (EMEA) will be responsible for overseeing all music business and legal affairs matters during production including music clearance and licensing and all original music matters across EMEA. This position works closely with Netflix’s production partners, internal teams, and external music industry stakeholders. The role requires an individual with legal expertise in music rights and production, coupled with strong project management, negotiation, and collaboration skills.
The ideal candidate will have: expertise in the music market for series or film production hubs throughout EMEA; a thorough understanding of the music nuances in producing for local markets (whether for linear distribution or other media) vs producing for global distribution; and immersive, hands-on experience in independently negotiating commercial terms and legal issues and drafting music license and composer agreements for series/film production in those markets.
Key Responsibilities:
Supporting our production partners in their negotiation of music deals (eg, composer, artist and songwriter deals, music director and music production deals, record company and music publishing waivers) in addition to handling certain music deals in-house (eg, negotiating commercial terms and structuring, negotiating and drafting agreements with composers, songwriters, artists, performers, producers and record companies).
Provide music business & legal support and guidance to internal teams, including negotiating and drafting music terms in production services agreements, content licences and other rights acquisition deals and guidance around song credits
Advise on music business/legal matters for internal teams such as Production, Creative, and Rights Acquisition teams.
Serve as a primary contact for music clearance and licensing matters for content verticals (e.g., series, film, or documentary) across EMEA, responsible for overseeing the clearance and licensing of songs and advising internal and external stakeholders on music rights and restrictions as it pertains to pre-existing music.
Overseeing music clearances from start to finish, including: onboarding and guiding music supervisors and music clearance personnel. Advise on clearance; researching rights advising on quotes from labels, publishers and music libraries, including licensor modifications to quotes; tracking rights and restrictions to ensure consistency across Netflix’s productions; monitoring music budgets and clearance reports in coordination with our creative teams, providing “ballpark estimates” when needed; making public domain determinations; reviewing song credits; ensuring accurate legal delivery of music clearance documentation.
Managing, drafting, negotiating, reviewing, redlining, tracking and administering licenses (master and synch, etc.) and establishing, negotiating and administering music license boilerplate forms with all licensors.
Researching music ownership and seeking, obtaining and negotiating quotes from record labels, music publishers and music libraries.
Participating in other projects and initiatives specific to Netflix's music needs.
Build and maintain relationships with music supervisors, agents, production counsel, managers, publishers, and record companies across the music industry.
Lead and present music-related educational sessions to Netflix internal teams and external production partners.
Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably on multiple projects under tight time frames in a fast-paced production environment.
Requirements:
Minimum 5 - 7 years as a Counsel or Music Business & Legal Affairs advisor.
Hands-on experience in drafting and negotiating music-related agreements (composer, artist, performer, synchronisation, master use,etc.).
Practical knowledge of music copyright laws, clearance processes, and production timelines for series, film, and documentaries.
In-depth understanding of music licensing, including dealing with labels, publishers, and music libraries.
Experience in the music industry with established relationships with music agents and managers.
Experience in-house at a production company is highly preferred.
Exceptional drafting and negotiation skills with attention to detail.
Project management expertise, able to manage multiple deals and projects simultaneously.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and cultures.
Ability to adapt and remain flexible in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Cultural curiosity and awareness, with a willingness to address implicit biases.
Should be fluent in English with an additional EMEA language is preferred.
Travel to Europe is essential with travel to the U.S. as required.
