The Staff Software Engineer, Metrics and Business Intelligence role at Google focuses on building and maintaining the technical foundation for key performance indicators (KPIs) across major products (Search, Workspace, Gmail, etc.). Responsibilities include providing technical leadership on high-impact projects, coaching engineers, managing project priorities, and designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining large-scale software solutions. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in software development, data structures/algorithms, testing, launching products, software design and architecture, SQL, and data analytics. Experience with data warehousing, business intelligence, and ETL processes is also crucial. The team works on critical infrastructure and impacts important technical decisions across Google.
Must have:
  • 8+ years software development experience
  • Data structures/algorithms expertise
  • 5+ years testing & launching software
  • 5+ years SQL and data analytics experience
  • Software design and architecture experience
  • Technical leadership and project management
Good to have:
  • Master's or PhD in related field
  • Experience in a complex, matrixed organization
  • Data warehousing/BI/reporting solution design
  • Advanced SQL skills and relational database expertise
  • ETL development for structured and unstructured data

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with SQL and data analytics.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • Experience in designing and delivering data warehousing/business intelligence/reporting solutions and working with data manipulation using SQL.
  • Advanced skills in SQL and relational databases including queries, database definition and schema design. Experience designing data models and data warehouses, writing and maintaining ETLs which operate on structured and unstructured sources.

We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.
