Studio Hermitage is a North Carolina-based transmedia company working on original IP called "Our Brilliant Ruin" for production across various formats. Studio Hermitage’s founders include CEO Paxton Galvanek (ex-Funcom), CCO Justin Achilli (ex-Paradox, ex-Ubisoft/ Red Storm), and Studio Art Director Andy Foltz (ex-Ubisoft/ Red Storm) and include 70+ years of their combined industry experience.

Our team at Studio Hermitage is searching for an exceptionally talented and passionate Technical Content Designer who can create, populate, manage, and oversee the content and content systems within UE5 on the first video game for Our Brilliant Ruin.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and oversee the architecture of the game’s content systems. This includes defining how copy/ text and assets (such as characters, items, levels, etc.) are organized, loaded, and managed within UE5.
  • Ensure that the content system can handle large-scale games efficiently, optimizing memory usage and load times.
  • Write or locate story elements/content and directly implement them into the game’s engine. A robust understanding of narrative structure, game writing, and technical game design is needed.
  • Manage Workflow Optimization by streamlining the process of importing, updating, and exporting game assets (3D models, environments, animations, etc.) into Unreal Engine 5.
  • Assist game designers in placing assets within game levels. Optimize placement for performance and gameplay flow.
  • Work with Blueprints to create interactive gameplay elements. Define how different game components (characters, objects, AI behaviors) interact with each other.
  • Design quests, missions, and objectives that drive the player’s progression. This includes writing dialogue, creating quest markers, and defining success conditions.
  • Playtest your work, identifying issues related to gameplay, progression, or technical glitches. When they encounter bugs or issues, they report them to the relevant team members for resolution.
  • Work closely with other designers, artists, animators, sound designers, and programmers. Effective communication is key to ensuring everyone is aligned on the game’s vision.
  • Create and maintain documentation for content systems, level design guidelines, and asset pipelines.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3+ years of experience as a content, narrative, or game designer in the video game development industry.
  • Experience with content systems within Unreal Engine 5.
  • Extensive content creation experience. Ideally, someone who has creatively owned complete implementations from concept to delivery.
  • Experience with Asset Integration — specifically understanding how to integrate copy/ text, 3D models, textures, animations, and audio into the engine is crucial.

  • Effective communication and the ability to work in a team are vital.
  • Strong prototyping and technical implementation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A good portfolio of previous projects.
