Job Description
This Tooling Engineer role at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin focuses on stamping dies for Model Y. Responsibilities include determining feasibility and cost of ECOs, collaborating with teams to develop modification plans for stamping dies, leading full-cycle ECO implementation, managing die modification requests to improve quality, reducing die downtime, implementing systems to reduce defects, supporting die design and vendor buyoff, and developing methods to track system effectiveness. The ideal candidate will have experience with CAD software (CATIA V5 preferred), large die design, CNC programming, and managing multiple projects with competing priorities.
Must have:
- BSc/MSc in Mechanical Engineering or 5+ years experience
- 5+ years CAD experience (CATIA V5 preferred)
- 5+ years large die design experience
- Fluent in English and German
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Good to have:
- 3+ years CNC programming experience
- Experience with world-class appearance requirements

- Determine feasibility of proposed Model Y Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and determine time and cost to implement.
- Collaborate with CAD Tech Lead, ECO/Machining Lead, and Toolmakers to develop modification plans for stamping dies to implement quality improvements, new build die design, Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and other modifications and/or repairs.
- Lead full-cycle implementation of ECOs from CATIA model of updated part design. This includes data overlay to determine areas of change, review of die design data to determine modification plan and coordination with both Tool & Die ECO team and vendors to implement changes.
- Technical ordering of spare parts or in new project.
- Attend change control meetings to assess priority of Model Y ECOs and modification requests based on impact to quality and cost.
- Update 3D die designs to reflect Engineering Change Orders.
- Lead implementation of Die Modification Requests (DMRs) to improve dimensional quality of stamped panels to increase panel fit in BIW and overall body accuracy.
- Reduce die related downtime, striving for zero downtime, through identification and implementation of technical and systemic improvements to reduce Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
- Implement systems to reduce occurrence of defects (target is 0).
- Develop methods to track effectiveness of Tool & Die systems and identify and implement items to drive improvements.
- Support die design, vendor buyoff and homeline trials for new model dies.
- BSc or MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or 5+ years of experience as a Tooling Engineering or Designer
- 5+ years of experience with CAD software (CATIA V5 preferred)
- 5+ years of experience in large die design
- 3+ years of experience programming CNCs preferred
- Experience working with dies with world class appearance requirements.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize a large number of projects with competing priorities, considering available manpower.
- Strong analytic problem solving skills.
- Must be fluent in the English and German language.
- Strong organizational, communication and documentation skills.
