Colour TD, reporting to the Head of Pipeline.

The colour TD is responsible for managing and improving the technical aspects of colour workflows across the production pipeline at One of Us. This role requires expertise in colour science, colour management tools, and a deep understanding of digital colour grading, LUT creation, ACES and HDR workflows. Additionally, the Colour TD will contribute to the development and optimization of colour-related pipeline tools and processes. This role is crucial for ensuring accurate colour representation, consistency across all departments, and seamless integration of visual effects with live-action footage.

Main Responsibilities:

1. Colour Science and Management:

Collaborate with the coordinator to manage the day-to-day operations of the colour related work on shows, assisting Show Supervisors & Production.

Develop and maintain colour pipelines and workflows for all VFX departments.

Create and manage colour spaces, LUTs, and OCIO configurations to ensure accurate colour representation across all stages of production.

Work closely with the VFX Supervisors, Lighting, Comp, Editorial and Grading teams to ensure colour accuracy from asset creation through final delivery.

Oversee the correct use of colour grading, tone mapping, and gamut conversion techniques for both SDR and HDR deliverables.

Ensure compliance with industry standards (ACES, HDR, Rec.709, etc.) and project-specific requirements.

2. Technical Oversight and Development:

Collaborate with the Pipeline team to develop and maintain tools that automate colour management tasks within software like Maya, Nuke, Houdini, and compositing tools.

Troubleshoot colour-related technical issues across the pipeline, resolving discrepancies between departments and different display devices.

Support lighting and rendering artists by ensuring correct colour workflow practices, advising on lighting setups to match colour standards, and working with shader teams to optimise material appearance.

Conduct regular reviews of pipeline workflows to identify potential improvements and develop solutions for more efficient colour handling.

3. Artistic Collaboration:

Collaborate with Supervisors and Leads to interpret creative briefs and maintain the desired visual style through effective colour management

4. Pipeline Integration:

Work with the Pipeline TDs and engineering teams to integrate colour workflows into the studio’s existing VFX pipeline, ensuring tools are scalable and easy to use.

Develop automation tools to streamline colour-related tasks across departments, from ingest and dailies to final delivery.

Regularly assess and implement updates to the studio’s colour management software and tools, ensuring they remain current with industry advancements and new display technologies.

5. Quality Control:

Conduct quality checks to ensure all deliverables meet the highest standards for colour accuracy and visual consistency across different media formats.

Help troubleshoot any colour discrepancies in renders, dailies, and final deliverables, working closely with the show Supervisors to resolve issues quickly.

Participate in discussion to evaluate and adjust colour workflows as necessary, implementing solutions that ensure consistent results across all projects.

Aims of the Role:

Build and maintain strong working relationships with all VFX departments and Pipeline teams to create effective colour workflows that support artists in delivering their best work.

Ensure that pipeline tools related to colour are user-friendly, optimised for efficiency, and continuously evolving to stay ahead of industry trends and challenges.

Ensure that all colour-related workflows are scalable and consistent across all projects and maintain high-quality standards even under tight deadlines.

Build documentation, training and tutorials for everything Color TD related for the VFX team.

Key Skills and Attributes Needed:

Strong knowledge of colour science, colour theory, and digital colour management in the context of visual effects and animation.

Experience with colour spaces (ACES, Rec.709, P3, etc.) and working knowledge of OCIO, HDR, and SDR workflows.

Proficiency in industry-standard software (Nuke, Maya, Houdini) regarding colour management (OCIO, LUTs, ICC profiles, etc.).

Familiarity with VFX and animation pipelines, and experience in building or optimising colour workflows in collaboration with pipeline teams.

Strong technical problem-solving skills with a deep understanding of rendering, lighting, and compositing, particularly in relation to colour accuracy and consistency.
