Vertigo Games, a VR game developer, seeks an Environment & Lighting Artist for their next VR game. Responsibilities include lighting design, collaboration with level designers, creating modular environments and props, ensuring performance optimization, and meeting deadlines. The ideal candidate has experience in a similar role on a console or PC game within a large team (50+), proficiency in Unreal Engine, lighting design, 3D asset creation, and strong art fundamentals. Experience with VR, material creation, scripting, and VFX is a plus.

Your mission
We are Vertigo Games, developers and publishers of top-end VR titles like Metro Awakening, Arizona Sunshine, After the Fall and The 7th Guest. Our Amsterdam studio has started development of our next VR game, following Metro Awakening, and we are looking to recruit an Environment & Lighting Artist who can aid us in our mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and implement a lighting design for all of the game environments in compliance with the artistic direction and technical constraints.
  • Closely co-operate with level designers in crafting a detailed world that follows the artistic direction and supports the gameplay.
  • Create and integrate modular environment pieces, props and materials into the game engine, from functional block out to polish.
  • Apply your understanding of composition, staging, and form to create immersive game environments that tell a story.
  • Ensure that environment assets are built and implemented in a way that maximizes performance while maintaining visual quality.
  • Follow the established production schedule and ensure that your environment assignments are delivered on time and meet the quality requirements.
  • Plan and co-ordinate your work regularly with your team, communicating effectively to ensure transparency.
Your profile
  • Experience of the full development cycle on a console or PC game in an environment art role in a team of 50 or more.
  • Skilled in building worlds in engine (Unreal Engine preferred). 
  • Highly skilled in lighting design and implementation, including time of day, fog/skyboxes, palette control, and post process effects.
  • Understanding of modularity and environment systems used in fast, iterative, and efficient production.
  • Experience and understanding of 3D asset creation and optimization.
  • Understanding of modern materials and shaders. 
  • Skilled at 3D modelling and texturing using Maya/Blender, and Substance Designer/Painter.
  • Understanding of art fundamentals, e.g. the function of form, color, proportions, and shape.
  • English on a proficient level.
Bonus points for
  • Experience with mobile and/or VR development.
  • Ability to create materials (Unreal, HLSL) and scripting (Unreal Blueprint, MEL, Python).
  • Experience with 3rd party tools which can increase the quality and efficiency in how we build environments. 
  • Can create environmental VFX (e.g. shaders, particle systems ).
