The reporter-researcher will work closely with correspondents and editors to accurately and efficiently report on news related to China. This includes gathering information through interviews, observations, and research, and presenting findings in clear written form. The role involves cultivating and maintaining sources, monitoring current events in Chinese news media, and providing updates and briefings. The reporter-researcher will also assist in translation, arrange interviews and logistics, and monitor social media for story ideas. The position is based in Seoul and requires regular attendance in the office.
Must have:
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin, written and spoken
  • News-gathering skills, including use of social media
  • Good news judgment and knowledge of Chinese politics and culture
Good to have:
  • Ability to use content management software
  • Familiarity with research tools such as Factiva and Nexis
  • Meticulous organizational skills and attention to detail

This role is a full-time hybrid position based in Seoul. We are able to offer relocation support to candidates based outside of South Korea. You will report directly to a correspondent and the China editor, with regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. Please note that you will be required to work on a scheduled basis, including occasionally on weekends and public holidays depending on the news. 

The International desk is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter-researcher to join our China team, to be based in our Seoul bureau. The reporter-researcher will produce original work with an emphasis on supporting the accuracy and breadth of Times stories through newsgathering and research.

In this role, the reporter-researcher will cover news on China accurately and efficiently; obtain information through interviews, observation and research, and present it in clear written or other form; revise copy as additional newsworthy material is received; and work in parallel assignments where practicable. In addition the reporter-researcher will discover and cultivate news sources and contacts and follow news trends closely, as well as provide material (including but not limited to audio, video, and web links, as required).

 

Main responsibilities:

  • Work closely with correspondents and editors to identify and help report high-impact stories accurately and efficiently
  • Present facts and analysis in clear written or other form and in conformity with style, length and other requirements
  • Cultivate and maintain sources and contacts, especially for news related to China
  • Monitor current events across Chinese news media, and provide updates and briefings
  • Obtain information through interviews, observations and research. Conduct interviews by telephone and in person with sources independently and with correspondents 
  • Provide translation to English and vice versa for correspondents and other journalists
  • Assist in making appointments for interviews and arranging logistics for reporting trips
  • Monitor social media and search trends for story ideas and to aid reporting
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • Other tasks as required by newsroom management

Ideal candidate: 

  • Fluency in English and Mandarin, written and spoken
  • News-gathering skills, including use of social media
  • Good news judgment and knowledge of Chinese politics and culture
  • Ability to use content management software
  • Familiarity with research tools such as Factiva and Nexis, and ability to analyze data
  • Meticulous organizational skills; ability to prioritize with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Shows initiative and independence
  • A good collaborator and receptive to feedback.  
  • An appreciation of The Times culture, writing style and commitment to journalistic standards and ethics.
