Job Details

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn’t imagine the future, we invent it. If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

We are hiring a full-time Research Assistant Producer to support design, development, and research of cooperative games that can be used to study human machine teaming. We’re interested in exploring how humans collaborate, communicate, and teach AI teammates in complex tasks. In order to study this problem, we will be building a series of cooperative games where teammates differ along gradients of asymmetry. For example, players might have different access to information, different access to space, different access to abilities or verbs. You will be collaborating with Dr. Erik Harpstead, a local team of CMU students, and external experts in human-machine teaming, who will help direct development toward broader research project goals.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Responsibilities will include coordinating a local team of student game developers and external collaborators to ensure development efforts stay focused on project goals.
  • Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect, and record results or observations.
  • Performs research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures. Researches and documents information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination, or presentation; writes technical reports. May build and validate quantitative models.
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • May program software in support of job functions. Attends project meetings.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Inclusion and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of diverse audiences. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Prior production experience would be desirable.
  • Excellent problem-solving, reasoning, analytical and communication skills.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
Requirements:
  • Successful background check
