Job Description

The Workroom Manager leads a team of skilled artisans in the day-to-day operation of costume production. Responsibilities include facilitating costume development and replenishment, handling confidential information, partnering with various collaborators (costumers, buyers, designers, vendors), creating manufacturing estimates, forecasting supply needs, addressing cast issues, and ensuring on-time, on-budget, high-quality production. This temporary role requires extensive experience in garment construction, alterations, pattern making, and leadership, with proficiency in software and various fabrics.
Must have:
  • 3+ years garment construction experience
  • 3+ years facilitating garment fittings
  • 1+ year leadership experience
  • Patterning software & 3D garment development software experience
  • Experience in theatre, film, apparel, or manufacturing
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Budget management and workflow experience
Good to have:
  • Experience with SAP, Gerber AccuMark, CLO, Marvelous Designer, Maya, Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience working with a unionized cast
  • Proficiency in Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, or Spanish

Job Summary:

The Workroom Manager leads all aspects of a diverse and dedicated cast of highly skilled artisans. This role leads the day-to-day operation of both people and processes with an eye toward teamwork, collaboration, and development.

This position reports to the Area Manager of Costume Production.

This is a temporary role with no guarantee of permanent placement.

What You Will Do

  • Lead a team of union hourly Cast Members

  • Facilitate the development and replenishment of Character costumes.

  • Handle confidential information pertaining to employees and intellectual property.

  • Partner with multiple collaborators to maintain product quality and designs.

  • Partner with Costumers, Buyers, Designers, & vendors.

  • Creating estimates for manufacturing costumes.

  • Forecast and order needed supplies, tools, and notions.

  • Responsible for ensuring that cast issues are addressed in a timely manner.

  • Ensure that manufacturing is on time, on budget, and of the utmost quality.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 3+ years experience in garment construction, alterations, and patterning techniques

  • 3+ years experience facilitating garment/costume fittings

  • 1+ years experience in indirect or direct leadership

  • Experience using patterning software and 3-D garment development software

  • Experience in the theater, film, apparel, or manufacturing industry

  • Experience with performers in various stages of dress/undress

  • Experience with sewing terms, fabric types, and garment notions

  • Experience leading workflow and project budgets

  • Experience communicating (both verbal and written) with a variety of partners at all levels

  • Experience working in a team environment where collaboration is key

  • Experience in planning, problem-solving, conflict resolution, influencing, and negotiating

  • Experience with continuous improvement process

  • Ability to work around all types of fabrics, fibers, foams, and synthetic furs

  • Ability to be flexible with work schedule, including weekends and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using SAP, Gerber AccuMark, CLO, Marvelous Designer, Maya, and/or Adobe Creative Suite

  • Proficient or fluent in Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, or Spanish

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required

  • Advanced degree in a Costuming, Textiles, or Apparel-related field is preferred
