Job Details

We are seeking a Canada based artist or graphic designer to work on DIGIDAMARA!

Who are BAGEL+BALLOON?

We’re a couple who fuse together our respective practices in game design and participatory art to create new interactive experiences. Check out the rest of our website to learn more!

What is DIGIDAMARA?

Digidamara is an original interactive theatre piece inspired by the Depression-era dance marathons of the 1930s. This project will explore themes of proximity, deservingness of support, two-tiered societies, and perceptions of reality through the hybrid application of devised theatre, object puppetry and a custom digital interface.

The more players (the audience) interact, the more they discover. A devising ensemble will create the script and characters which will adapt based on the audience input into the website. Theatrical live-streamed “Roundups” full of improvised skits, movement sequences and object theatre will be made in response, brought to life with the devising expertise of key collaborators Theatre Du Poulet. As the competition picks up pace and the fictional couples are whittled down, stories deepen, relationships are shredded and remade, and a winning team arises.

Position summary

Are you an Artist or Graphic Designer who is driven by making art with meaning that goes against the grain? We are seeking an imaginative team member who is open to collaboration and experimentation. Your role as Artist will be to generate visualisation mock ups for the front page of the website to help inspire the team with a vision of what our pilot project could look like. You would also help create / source a minimalistic ‘art kit’ of images and icons for use in the website pilot.

You will be working directly with Kai/Bagel, our Technical Director, who is in charge of the website look and feel, as well as the Creative Team and Marketing Team who will be aligning on a cohesive visual style for the project as a whole. Digidamara melds a website simulation of a dance marathon with a series of prerecorded and live streamed performances. It is essentially an interactive theatre event driven by digital interactions and so the aesthetics and layout of the website are an essential part to our project.

This is a remote position. We are currently designing the bones of the pilot. Your first day would be spent reviewing / giving feedback on the proposed pilot plan based on your expertise. After your art tasks are complete we will also bring you in for a ‘post mortem’ debrief of your time with the project so we can better plan the post-pilot phase. The project is CCA funded and there may be opportunity to work on Digidamara in the future as it grows.

Wages and timeline

We are able to offer $1750 for approx 10 non-consecutive days work. Needed from Mid Dec 2021 – Late May 2022.

The amount of work considered for 1 day is fully negotiable so a fair fee can be agreed upon – we are willing scale the scope of work to match your rates.

This project fits best around other commitments you may have and we understand that you may have other work at the same time.
