Counsel, Data Privacy and Security Legal - Korea

 Netflix seeks an experienced data privacy and security lawyer to join our Seoul Office in Korea. This role will be part of both Korea Legal and Global Privacy Teams. In this role, you will support the business in Korea, being the initial point of contact as well as providing legal support for all privacy/data protection matters in the market.  You will closely collaborate with various members of the APAC and Global legal teams (e.g., Global and APAC Data Privacy & Security, Marketing, Business Affairs, Employment, Partnerships, Tax, Games, and Ads) on a range of privacy and security-related legal matters.

THE OPPORTUNITY

What you’ll do

• Be the Privacy Pioneer: Lead the charge on privacy and data protection in Korea, serving as the initial point of contact for all privacy matters, working with the APAC Regional, Global, and local teams. 

• Collaborate and Innovate: Work hand-in-hand with our APAC and Global Privacy legal teams, as well as Marketing, Business Affairs, Employment, Partnerships, Tax, Games, and Ads, to tackle a wide range of privacy and security challenges.

• Stay Ahead of the Curve: Partner with our Global Affairs team, who will monitor and track policy developments, draft submissions, analyze those developments, and support Netflix in shaping its position on new laws and regulations.

• Educate and Empower: Provide context and insights on Korea data protection laws to our teams (both local and global) through engaging presentations, Q&A sessions, and training.

• Inquiries from Authorities: Manage inquiries from relevant authorities, ensuring consistency and working closely with global and regional legal teams.

REQUIREMENTS

• We’re seeking a qualified lawyer with 6~9 years of relevant experience in a law firm and/or in-house, with at least 4+ years of navigating data privacy laws and practices in Korea. Familiarity with privacy laws in other APAC countries is preferred. While not required, experience in the internet, technology, or media sectors, familiarity with regulatory compliance on information security, such as K-ISMS certification, would be preferred;

• CIPP or equivalent privacy certification is preferred;

• Solution-driven mindset and the ability to think practically, work independently with little guidance, but also to use good judgment to escalate issues when needed;

• Proficiency in both English and Korean, including excellent verbal and written communication skills;

• Strong analytical capabilities and sound judgment; 

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;

• Ability to understand and work with commercial and legal ambiguity and nuance to find creative and practical solutions;

• Ability to learn quickly and tackle new subjects outside area of expertise; and

• Ability to work proactively, independently, collaboratively, and reliably under pressure.
