Job Description

As a Staff Software Engineer, Pixel Performance at Google, you'll be responsible for optimizing the performance of Pixel phones and tablets. This involves characterizing and optimizing SoC platform and device performance, developing performance management software, analyzing metrics and workloads, and debugging performance issues. You'll work with cross-functional teams to create efficient solutions utilizing system resources (CPU, GPU, memory), ensuring smooth system operation. Key responsibilities include designing performance management software components, developing algorithms for improving Android workload efficiency, analyzing SoC component utilization, and identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks. The role demands expertise in Linux Kernel, embedded systems, and performance optimization techniques.
Must have:
  • 8+ years software development experience
  • 5+ years testing and launching software
  • 5+ years Linux Kernel, OS, embedded systems experience
  • Performance optimization and analysis
  • Android BSP and OS knowledge
  • Design performance management software
Good to have:
  • Master's degree in related field
  • Technical leadership experience
  • Experience in complex organizations
  • Low-level hardware architecture knowledge (ARM)
  • Experience with embedded processors, performance tuning

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with Linux Kernel, operating systems, and embedded systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 7 years of experience with performance optimization and analysis, embedded processors, performance tuning, Android BSP, Android operating system, or a compiler.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • Experience with low-level hardware architecture details, such as ARM.

As a Staff Software Engineer, Pixel Performance, you will be responsible for performance for Pixel phones and tablets, and will focus on SoC platform and device performance characterization and optimization, establishing, and improving performance KPIs. You will develop OS performance management software and tuning device policy, analyze metrics and profile workloads, analyze lab and field performance issues, and improve performance on future hardware architectures. You will also work across various functional teams to create innovative and efficient solutions utilizing system resources such as CPU and fabric in the SoC and ensuring the system runs smoothly to support key use cases.

The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.

Responsibilities

  • Design performance management related software components for Pixel devices.
  • Develop innovative algorithms for improving Android workload efficiency (e.g., DVFS, governors, scheduler, runtimes).
  • Improve performance and power efficiency for Pixel devices by identifying and analyzing critical user journeys, evaluating software and hardware design choices on key workloads, and debugging difficult software optimization issues.
  • Define, design, and implement novel approaches to make our software significantly more performant.
  • Analyze the utilization of the key component of System on a Chip (SoC) like CPU, GPU, and memory subsystems.
