Job Description

The New York Times is seeking a domestic policy editor for its Washington bureau. The editor will oversee a team covering healthcare, education, immigration, poverty, and social issues. Responsibilities include managing coverage, editing copy, coordinating with other editors, and working with the Live team and visual editors. The position is hybrid, requiring regular office attendance. The editor will be responsible for initiating and managing lines of coverage across a variety of issues, editing copy to a high standard, coordinating and communicating intensively with other editors across the newsroom, working closely with the Live team on breaking news and collaborating with visual, photo and graphics editors to assure rich presentation of stories.
Must have:
  • 10+ years of experience running coverage
  • 5+ years of experience guiding reporters in breaking news
Good to have:
  • Prior experience collaborating across The New York Times newsroom

The New York Times is looking for a domestic policy editor for its Washington bureau. You will oversee a team of reporters covering health care, education, immigration, poverty and social issues. 

While you will be responsible for Washington-based reporting, you will need to coordinate with colleagues on other desks with overlapping beats and encourage partnerships across the newsroom. You will also collaborate with other editors in the Washington bureau, including those overseeing Congress, the White House and economic policy.

 This is a hybrid position based in Washington, DC and requires regular attendance in the office each week.

Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and manage lines of coverage across a variety of issues.

  • Edit copy to a high standard, including breaking news and enterprise stories.

  • Coordinate and communicate intensively with other editors across the newsroom with overlapping responsibilities.

  • Work closely with the Live team on breaking news.

  • Collaborate with visual, photo and graphics editors to assure rich presentation of stories.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Washington DC bureau chief.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience running coverage and helping to produce ambitious enterprise and analytical pieces.

  • 5+ years of experience guiding reporters in breaking news on competitive beats.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience collaborating and partnering with colleagues across The New York Times newsroom.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$175,000 - $195,000 USD
