Job Description

This position is for a MITACs student to join the team for the September 2025 semester. The student will be responsible for a research project using AI techniques to detect fraud or money laundering using real-world data. The student will be expected to write an academic paper or report based on the research findings and present the results at the Nasdaq Verafin AI Learning Seminar Series. The role requires independent research and teamwork, proficiency in multiple programming languages (including Python), strong data analysis skills, and a deep desire to learn and passion for crime fighting.

Exciting Opportunity: MITACs Student 

We're seeking a talented MITACs Student to join our vibrant team for the September 2025 semester. In this role, you'll be responsible for a research project applying cutting edge AI techniques to help detect Fraud or Money Laundering.    

  

NOTE: Applicants MUST be an active Masters or PhD student at Memorial University for the entire duration of the internship. 

 

What You'll Do: 

  • Bring a project from conception to implementation  

  • Apply cutting edge techniques to fraud and money laundering detection problems using real world data  

  • Write an academic paper/report based on research findings  

  • Present results at Nasdaq Verafin’s AI Learning Seminar Series 

 

What We're Looking For: 

  • Ability to work both as an independent researcher and as a member of a team  

  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages, including Python  

  • Strong data analysis skills  

  • A deep desire to learn new things  

  • A passion for crime fighting 

 

What Success Looks Like: 

  • Publishing a paper at an AI conference  

  • Contributing ideas to the AI projects of other students  

  • Working effectively with other teams and stakeholders

This position is located in St. John’s and offers the opportunity for a hybrid work environment (at least 2 days a week in office, subject to change), providing flexibility and accessibility for qualified candidates
