Job Description

This Senior Database Engineer role involves working with a software development team using Agile methods to improve software solutions for Public Safety customers. Responsibilities include maintaining existing applications and developing new features to improve product quality and customer satisfaction. The role focuses on the on-premise product, with opportunities to work on the CAD in the Cloud Azure solution. The team works closely with customers and customer support to evaluate, triage, and enhance the PremierOne CAD product. The role requires expertise in SQL database programming and administration, including performance tuning and query optimization. The candidate will be involved in evaluating software quality through testing and will participate in an on-call rotation.
Must have:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft SQL database programming and administration.
  • Strong understanding of SQL performance and query optimization.
  • Experience developing Microsoft SQL stored procedures.
  • Strong debugging skills for SQL tracing and logging.
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of SQL Always On and high availability.
  • Experience with SQL Reporting and SSIS.
  • Ability to work with offshore teams.
  • Ability to triage issues with customers and support.

Department Overview

Centralized Managed and Support Operations (CMSO) is a group that delivers software solutions to the public safety sector. Our group is committed to providing the technology, knowledge, and tools that will allow our customers to focus on their mission critical goals and responsibilities. We provide support for ground breaking products and solutions that enable public safety entities to respond more quickly and safely to emergent situations. PSA deploys and supports products such as Computer Aided Dispatch, Records Management Systems, Jail Management Systems and Mobile Data Computing, among other offerings. CMSO is a fast-paced environment that seeks motivated and professional individuals willing to work towards our goals as an organization

The Solutions Support team within the CMSO - is a very technically based group, designated for Tier 3 PremierOne Application escalations from the Customer Support organization. The team also acts in a fashion to provide technical specialist duties to other internal Motorola departments (DBA/Code Debugging/System Audit/SCOM configurations, etc). The Solutions team is the input point for many teams regarding high level customer based issues. The team is the sole gateway into the engineering groups for input of code related defects within the Services organizations (CAD, Mobile, Records, Jail, and Suite applications). They play a pivotal role in assessing critical issues in a timely manner, and determining if code defect or configuration change is required. The Solutions Support team is involved in Incident management as a Tier 3 functional escalation point for Support, but is also the sole owner of the Problem Management process for the PremierOne product in for root cause analysis on these issue.


Job Description

Use your SQL database expertise to work as a member of our software development team using modern Agile software development techniques to help drive and improve software solutions for our Public Safety customers.  We are looking for a talented and motivated SQL database engineer interested in building and maintaining software and systems that truly make a difference. This role will focus on the maintenance of existing applications and development to improve product quality and increase customer satisfaction.  The work will primarily be focused on our on-premise product, but there is also an opportunity to work on our CAD in the Cloud Azure solution.  Our team works closely with our customers and our customer support organization to evaluate, triage and improve our PremierOne CAD product’s functionality and performance.

Preferred Requirements:

  • High level of proficiency in all areas of Microsoft SQL database programing and administration.

  • Very strong understanding SQL performance and Microsoft SQL query optimization and tuning.

  • Experience developing Microsoft SQL stored procedures and SQL Agent jobs/

  • Knowledge of SQL Always On and high availability database redundancy concepts a strong plus.

  • Experience with SQL Reporting and SSIS a plus.

  • Strong debugging skills required - knowledge of SQL Tracing, SQL Logging and ability to find root cause performance and stability issues.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Other attributes:

  • Able to work with other teams including offshore teams and the Customer Support organization

  • Ability to triage issues in production with the Customer and Customer support.

  • Ability to evaluate software quality through the use of load testing and stress testing.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent time management, ability to juggle priorities, and project follow through.

  • Willingness to be in an on call rotation with other database engineers should Customer issues arise off hours.

Target Base Salary Range

$101,300.00 - $202,600.00

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.


Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 4+ years of Microsoft SQL database experience
  • Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customer
