Job Description

Google seeks a Senior Optical Network Engineer to scale its transport network cost-effectively. Responsibilities encompass defining requirements, identifying technologies, collaborating with vendors and internal teams, developing and executing test plans for optical systems, automating test infrastructure, and proactively developing tools for network management and operations automation. The role requires experience with optical technologies (client transceivers, optical metro, DWDM, submarine systems) and programming languages (C++, Go, Python). The engineer will work on large-scale network planning and design across multiple sites and products, ensuring reliable network operations for millions of users.

Job Details

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience with one or more optical technologies such as client transceivers, optical metro, long-haul DWDM systems, or submarine systems.
  • Experience in one or more programming languages such as C++, Go, or Python.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with network equipment manufacturer or network operator in engineering or design role.
  • Experience with planning and designing large scale networks (e.g., multiple sites, multiple products, etc.)

The Network Team is responsible for operating that network reliably and at scale. Our team owns the full life cycle of all space, power, and network assets in all of Google’s data centers and metro points of presence globally. From the foundation, we are involved from site acquisition to construction and are accountable for what space and power is delivered. We're involved in every facet of network delivery from architecture and design to installation, configuration, activation, and commissioning.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $142,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Define requirements and identify technologies for scaling our transport network in a cost-efficient and operationally streamlined manner.
  • Engage with external vendors and internal teams to operationalize stable, scalable platforms.
  • Develop and execute test plans for optical systems.
  • Automate test infrastructure to qualify and introduce new products into our production network.
  • Proactively develop tools and processes for automation of network management and operations.
