New York, NYArs Technica is seeking a creative, experienced writer to join our technology coverage team to enhance our coverage of artificial intelligence and "big tech"—specifically, on Google. In this role, you'll own the Google beat, taking the lead on short- and long-form reporting focusing on the ways in which Google's broad and ever-changing portfolio of products affect the world we live in. This starts with reporting on the impactful topics of artificial intelligence and machine learning, but will also include coverage related to innovations in search and data management, cloud technology, and mobile operating systems and devices.
This role is 100% virtual and candidates can be based anywhere in the US.
Senior Technology Reporter, Google AI & Platforms
The Senior Technology Reporter will work with the Ars Technica team to produce features and reports, including news and analysis, in the consumer technology field. We’re looking for a subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas:
Generative Artificial Intelligence
Google Search
Google products, including
Android
Cloud
Hardware
In addition to daily news coverage, the position will also write occasional long-form pieces on matters of expertise, including product reviews. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities:
Write regularly on consumer technology news, including but not limited to CPUs, GPUs, PCs, laptops, phones, tablets, smart watches, Internet of Things devices, operating systems, and other gadgets
May be expected to have one or two areas of primary coverage focus
Liveblog product announcements as directed
Works under the direction of the Senior Editor or other manager as designated
Collaborate with Senior Editor on product coverage and event calendar as needed
Write occasionally on ad hoc topics, as assigned
Take photographs and edit images as appropriate for reviews and news coverage
Engage with comments on Ars tech stories
Work with editors and staff to generate story ideas
Write occasional feature-length articles on in-depth topics as pitched or assigned
Generate headlines in accordance with news practices
Integrate feedback from editors on writing content and quality
Participate actively in team collaboration and project management tools and processes
Travel as required
Help guide Ars technology coverage
This role may occasionally engage in editing
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager
Qualifications:
5+ years of demonstrated writing and research expertise in subject matter
Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as projects may
require
Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative team player and dedicated individual contributor
Good time management and self-starting ability
Critical thinking ability
Capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment
Timeliness and dependability for multiple projects and competing assignments
This is a guild position.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $70,000-$110,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
