About the Role:

As a Staff Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of our engineering initiatives. Your responsibilities will extend beyond technical excellence; you will be expected to provide high-level strategic input to our internal teams, ensuring alignment with our long-term objectives. Additionally, you will serve as a leadership voice with our customers, representing our engineering capabilities and fostering strong, collaborative relationships. Your expertise and insights will be instrumental in driving innovation and influencing both internal and external stakeholders.

The pursuit of engineering excellence also requires Staff Engineers to foster the growth of other engineers at Rocket Science, leveraging your experience in mentoring and sponsorship and making room for others to meet their full potential.

What We Value:

  • Technical Skills: Domain expertise in backend engineering, including a mastery of the following:

    • Languages: One or more of: C#, Go, Java, Kotlin, and Rust

    • Infrastructure: Terraform, Docker, or Kubernetes

    • Cloud Services: AWS, Azure, or GCP

    • Data Storage, Caching, Interconnection, and Optimization Techniques

  • Problem Solving / Analytical Mindset: Experience working with the customer to deep dive the problem space and form strong opinions on the path towards the best solution.

  • Relationship Building and Customer Empathy: Strong customer communication skills, including the ability to uncover specific technical needs and translate those needs into actionable plans.

  • Leadership: Capacity for high-level technical leadership and a willingness to provide guidance to our engineering teams.

  • Drive Strategy: Ability to drive the development and implementation of the organization's technical strategy.

  • Role Model: Passion for helping to grow individuals through mentorship and support, as well as the broader capacity to empower others to reach their growth potential.

  • Engineering Excellence:  Ability to use deep domain experience to set the standards for engineering quality, communication, and delivery, while also leaning into management skills to hold the team and business accountable.

  • Team Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams

  • Strategic Influence: Able to collaborate with senior leadership to align technical strategies with overall business goals.

The salary for this role is typically within the range of $145,000-200,000/year. Please note that this range includes multiple levels of experience and actual pay will ultimately be contingent upon a variety of factors, including your own combination of experience, skills, and qualifications. Experience with Golang is a must.
