The position requires 12+ years of legal experience in data privacy and government affairs.

The Director, Counsel Privacy and Regulatory will be responsible for leading the team’s legal commercial matters (outside of commercial contracts and employment law).   These include leading the acquisitions and integrations, product licensing and launch, intellectual property portfolio management, non-employment litigation,  procurement legal support,  data privacy laws and regulations compliance.  This position will also be responsible for supporting U.S. government and State and Local Education compliance.   This position will be fully remote and reports directly to the General Counsel.  

 

Responsibilities 

  • Manage outside counsel to support Acquisitions activity, including diligence through integration;  
  • Manage active non-employee litigation matters; 
  • Support the product development teams in go-to-market legal matters (compliance, open source, licensing, data privacy etc.);
  • Monitor and advise on U.S. and U.N. Sanctions compliance and export control matters; ; 
  • Act as privacy legal point of contact for the appropriate business and functional leaders and their teams and inform them of their privacy compliance obligations pursuant to privacy policies and applicable data protection laws
  • Support the implementation of the Central Privacy Compliance Program to facilitate compliance with Privacy policy/standards and applicable data protection laws. Provide subject matter expert support and consultancy to promote and facilitate privacy compliance
  • Implement oversee and monitor Central Privacy Compliance Program activities such as policies and procedures; standards; guidelines; and tools. This also includes drafting and supporting the implementation of privacy notices, consent statements, data retention standards and other privacy compliance controls
  • Identify personal data processing activities carried out by the relevant business or function and execute privacy compliance assessments (when required). Maintain up to date processing registry (Controller and Processor) of the relevant business or function. Drive and embed privacy by design controls into the business processes, quality management systems, products and propositions
  • Act as Privacy Investigation Lead in response to potential personal data breaches per established protocol and documentation requirements 
  • Upon request, provide privacy compliance support for the fulfilment of data subject requests (or privacy-related complaints) related to the relevant business or function assigned to you 
  • Act as primary liaison with regional regulators on privacy matters where required and investigate regulatory complaints in accordance with statutory requirements 
  • Negotiate (internally and externally) terms of contracts, partnering with business departments and attorneys, draft agreements, consulting with business partners and attorneys, liaise and cooperate with external counsels as required 
  • Conduct systematic risk assessments, evaluate technical and organizational measures (TOMs), and regularly audit and assess data handling processes 
  • Serve as the go to resource for Government regulations, both US and international.  Provide the relevant business units with updates and requirements for doing business with federal, state, and local customers 
  • Advise on government bids and tenders internationally 
  • Understand our software product roadmap, expansion into new markets and products and develop a strategy to maintain compliance
  • Manage external counsel relationships regarding applicable matters 
  • Interface with the Corporate Compliance team as necessary
  • Advise on submission of regulatory reporting to various government agencies
  • Work across the organization, including at the senior most levels, to proactively prepare Veeam for future regulatory requirements
  • Educate appropriate internal teams, including sales and marketing, on upcoming regulations and how these regulations may require changes to their processes
  • Review relevant laws and regulations for business impact 

 

Qualifications 

  • 12+ years within a legal role focusing on data privacy and/or government affairs 
  • Direct experience managing and leading an AI governance structure within their company.
  • Juris Doctorate Degree (or International Equivalent) or equivalent work experience 
  • In depth technical knowledge and experience in relevant data privacy laws and regulations 
  • Familiarity with government regulations, specifically those impacting the technology – software industry.   
  • Demonstrated experience influencing without formal authority to accomplish company-wide goals 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives and project teams 
  • Strong business and financial acumen
