As a Game Designer on the League of Legends Game Modes Team, you will design and improve the player experience. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and work with every tool at hand to design and iterate player-focused designs that'll delight millions around the world. You will be responsible for assessing the current state of game modes, looking for areas for improvement; anticipating player needs regarding game modes; developing a vision for new and updated game modes in League of Legends; updating and balancing existing game modes; working with a diverse team of developers to deliver compelling new features; and producing technically sound, sustainable scripting for new features. You will also be expected to build positive relationships across teams at Riot in shared gameplay spaces.

As a Game Designer, you will design and improve the player experience. Your analytical skills, player insight, and creativity help craft in- and out-of-game experiences that engage and surprise players. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and work with every tool at hand to design and iterate player-focused designs that'll delight millions around the world.

You will report to the Game Design Manager on the League of Legends Game Modes Team in Sydney. Understanding League or other MOBAs will be crucial to understanding what appeals to our players. You will design, tweak and optimise the player experience. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams globally to improve our existing roster of game modes, from ARAM to Ultimate Spellbook, and explore what new modes can be.

We’re looking for designers who deeply understand MOBA gameplay and what our current modes offer and want to build experiences for a diverse audience.

Responsibilities:

  • Leveraging your knowledge of MOBAs, assess the current state of game modes, looking for areas for improvement

  • Anticipate player needs regarding game modes

  • Work with team leads to develop a vision for new and updated game modes in League of Legends

  • Update and balance existing game modes

  • Work with a diverse team of developers to deliver compelling new features

  • Produce technically sound, sustainable scripting for new features

  • Build positive relationships across teams at Riot in shared gameplay spaces

Required Qualifications:

  • You apply a rigorous approach to design. You identify what creates interesting gameplay, what appeals to players, and why things work. You're able to translate lessons from one genre to another.

  • You can identify a problem, develop a range of solutions to it, and select the most appropriate one. Then, you can create and communicate the details of that proposed solution.

  • You are exemplary at sharing and asking for feedback.

  • You deeply understand player needs, especially those related to deep, meaningful player connections and unique game modes that keep League of Legends fresh.

  • You have a comprehensive understanding of League of Legends or MOBA design principles, particularly with respect to game modes.

Desired Qualifications:

  • You express the goals of your project to both designers and non-designers, along with the rationale behind how you build those goals

  • Your work is internally coherent, thematic where appropriate and trades off different values against each other to accomplish team goals.

  • Can quickly produce a wide breadth of gameplay solutions and generate and identify an excellent solution

  • Can assess a game mode design thoroughly, identify all significant problems, and prioritise them

We will look at your past studies and experience, but for this role, we also look for dedicated people with a personal relationship with games.
