Summary

Gravity Well is seeking an experienced Technical Designer to create innovative gameplay systems and robust solutions for complex game mechanics. Responsibilities include communicating player experience goals, prototyping gameplay features, assisting level designers, scaling simple solutions into robust frameworks, and providing feedback on all game aspects. The ideal candidate will have experience with custom scripting languages, a strong understanding of game development math (linear algebra and trigonometry), and a shipped game as a technical/scripting designer. The role involves reacting to feedback from internal and external playtests to improve the game and the ability to work in a custom text-based scripting language.

We are looking for an experienced, creative and technical designer with a strong sense of systems and and the ability to own and drive features for the Design department - someone who can do great work in our custom text-based scripting language.

Are you inspired by complex mechanisms and enjoy understanding specifically what makes a thing tick? We are looking for experienced and creative technical designers to help create innovative gameplay systems and sturdy solutions for complex gameplay issues that players enjoy interacting with over and over again!

At Gravity Well, you will be empowered to make the game better regardless of specialization. What You'll Do:

  • Communicate player experience goals for gameplay systems to other departments and stakeholders
  • Create prototypes that clearly represent design intent for various aspects of gameplay
  • Assist level designers in developing gameplay experiences  
  • Take simple solutions and scale them to solid technical frameworks for the design department to move forward with in production  
  • Assist other departments in developing systems for expressing their content in game
  • Give meaningful feedback on all aspects of the game by being an advocate for players at every possible opportunity
  • In order to make a game that players love, you will react to feedback from regular internal playtests and external focus tests as you see fit

You Have:

  • Experience with a custom scripting language
  • Fundamental understanding math for game development, i.e. linear algebra and trigonometry
  • Have shipped a game as a technical/scripting designer

Ideally You'll Have:

  • 3+ years of professional experience, with an emphasis on scripting and technical design
  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine
  • Strong design sensibilities with the ability to independently identify ways to improve the player experience
  • A strong sense of identifying simple solutions to complex problems

What You’ll Get:

The base pay for this role is $125,000 to $150,000 per year (or equivalent in your local currency). We pay fairly across our global team regardless of your location but it will differ based on factors such as experience, qualifications etc.

This position is for US and Canadian residents. We have an office in California if you like to come to an office, but most employees work from home across different US time zones and that’s totally fine.
