We are a crowdfunded company and have a dedicated and enthusiastic community of backers who are helping us create the “Best Damn Space Sim Ever”. We want to build the best we can deliver and we believe wholeheartedly in the value of exceptional diverse talent. Cloud Imperium Games is seeking an experienced Character Artist to join our team. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Character Art team to develop high-fidelity digital doubles of celebrity talent, as well as detailed clothing and armour assets for Squadron 42. These assets will be featured across gameplay, cinematics, and marketing materials. If you're passionate about crafting high-quality assets and approach every character as both an artist and a problem solver—interpreting reference with creativity while ensuring functionality, consistency, and in-engine performance—we’d love to hear from you. This person will be working at the cutting-edge of development for the action-packed cinematic story campaign “Squadron 42” with a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, John Rhys-Davies, and Mark Strong. Founded in 2012, Cloud Imperium Games creates cutting-edge videogames that defy expectations. We’re currently developing Star Citizen, a ground-breaking multiplayer online space sim, and Squadron 42, a generational cinematic single-player adventure set in the same universe. Join us as we explore new frontiers and make videogame history. Develop fully game-ready character assets for Squadron 42, with a focus on visual fidelity, performance, and integration within Star Engine. Create characters, clothing, and armour based on concept art or reference photos. Bring faces to life by creating photorealistic heads for the cast of Squadron 42. Collaborate with the Art Director to set visual styles and meet the quality bar. Build clean topology with high consideration for animation. Give and receive feedback from peers while providing guidance and support to more junior team members. What do we expect from our Character Artists? Proven experience in a Character Art position. Ability to create believable, game-ready characters that are full of life and personality. Knowledge of human anatomy and form, with special attention to realism. Strong skills in hard-surface modelling (e.g., armour) and organic modelling (e.g. clothing). Knowledge of major 3D software packages (such as Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, and Marvelous Designer) and industry practices such as physically based rendering. Foundational knowledge of cinematic presentation within a game engine—leveraging cameras, lighting, and scene composition to enhance visual storytelling. Work closely with Technical Character Artists to ensure seamless integration of assets, efficient workflows, and high-quality character performance in-engine. If you’re an experienced, driven Character Artist who thrives on 80s-style sci-fi vibes and larger-than-life heroes, we want to hear from you.
