As a Houdini Artist volunteer, you'll utilize and improve existing procedural tools (like the Tunnel Tool) for creating 3D cave assets within Unreal Engine 4 for LoA:SO. This involves creating custom cave assets, updating existing tools, and collaborating effectively with the team through Slack. Experience with Houdini Indie is mandatory; Unreal Engine experience is recommended. Responsibilities include following team policies, attending meetings, and communicating asset needs with level designers.
Must have:
  • Valid Houdini Indie License
  • Houdini tool experience
  • Procedural development in UE4
  • Excellent communication skills
Good to have:
  • Unreal Engine 4 experience

Company Description

Epoch Games is a volunteer-based, all-online, global game development team. We have no centrally-located headquarters and are unincorporated at this time. Most of the original founding members were modders developing the total conversion Middle Earth Roleplaying Project (MERP) mod for the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim:

Currently Epoch Games is developing The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order (LoA:SO). LoA:SO is an in-development indie open-world RPG set in an original fantasy world. The game is being developed using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 (UE4):

Job Description

In this volunteer position you will be asked to use already-created Houdini procedural tools we've developed, and perhaps update and created your own, for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order (LoA:SO) for Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). We are especially looking for someone who already has a working Houdini Indie license. Past experience with Unreal Engine is recommended, but not required.

We have what we call our Tunnel Tool, a Houdini Tool used to create 3D Cave Interior Assets that are imported into Unreal Engine. We need someone that can not only use it to create more custom Cave Assets for us, but also who can update it.

Communication is key to a smooth and efficient pipeline. You must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with other team-members. Don't be afraid to ask questions. We are an English-speaking team, so English fluency is a must. All of this is especially important for Level Designers as we expect them to communicate with 3D Artists letting them know assets that are still needed.

Other duties include following team policies (given through team orientation as upon acceptance to the team) as well as attending meetings through Slack (our instant message program that we use to communicate).

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Houdini Indie License
  • Houdini Tool experience, used for creating Procedural Development tools to be used in Unreal Engine

Recommended Requirements:

  • Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) experience
