Job Summary

Job Description

Manager- Operations will oversee the management of data operations for the Managed Investment Data team, powering Morningstar products. This role involves working closely with Team Leads and Global MID stakeholders to meet goals. The position reports to the Director in Mumbai. This strategic role focuses on core managed investments, driving operational excellence and innovation, and developing deep subject matter expertise. You will shape Morningstar’s data capabilities by supporting performance data methodologies, promoting data stewardship, and integrating new data into systems and products.
Must have:
  • Manage UK shift of 80 plus team members and 5 to 7 Team Leads
  • Ensure team operates efficiently with optimum resource utilization
  • Identify and develop talent on the team
  • Plan and execute cross training for critical processes
  • Ensure team has necessary resources and tools
  • Act as main point of contact for team queries
  • Monitor metrics dashboards and ensure Team Leads are on track
  • Track, measure, and report on daily, monthly, and quarterly metrics
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and training to Team Leads
  • Identify areas for improvement and scope of automation
  • Define team strategy and set tactical OKRs based on business goals
  • Conduct regular team check-ins, performance reviews, and career development planning
  • Foster strong collaboration with data collection, content design, and tech teams
  • Ensure optimal utilization of resources and tools
  • Champion best practice sharing and continuous learning
  • Oversee and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Stay current with industry regulations and client needs
  • Represent Morningstar as a subject matter expert on managed investment data
  • Collaborate with local and regional teams to align global standards
  • Act as a bridge between Research, Data, Technology, and Product teams
  • Support and manage technical data requests
Good to have:
  • Experience with multiple data domains (e.g., portfolio data, ESG data)
  • Familiarity with third-party data vendors and asset management workflows
  • Experience with process improvement methodologies such as LEAN, Six Sigma, or Agile
  • Prior experience using Morningstar’s internal tools (e.g., DataManager, XOI, RDB, TSDB)
  • Flexible to work in shifts

Manager- Operations will oversee the management of the data operations for Managed Investment Data team that powers the Morningstar products and platforms. As a Manager he/she will work closely with Team Leads, as well as with Global MID stakeholders to ensure the team meets the defined goals and objectives. This position would report to Director in Managed Investment Data team (MID) based in Mumbai.

The Role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and strategic Manager to join our Managed Investment Data team. This individual will work closely with Data Operations, Content Design, and Data Collection Technology teams to successfully deliver key Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). This is a global role that focuses on core managed investments, including mutual funds, exchangetraded products (ETPs), UCITS, model portfolios, and investment strategies. The ideal candidate will drive operational excellence and innovation, while also developing deep subject matter expertise in investment data.

You will play a critical role in shaping Morningstar’s data capabilities by supporting performance data methodologies, promoting data stewardship, and ensuring that new and existing data is well integrated into our systems and products. This role offers the opportunity to influence strategic direction while collaborating across global teams. This position is based out of Morningstar Mumbai Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing UK shift of 80 plus team members and 5 to 7 Team Leads including initiating recruiting/following up with HR, interviewing and selecting candidates for functional BAU processes and various other strategic initiatives and projects in the team.
  • Ensures the team is operating under the most efficient manner (optimum utilization of resources & capacity) to cater to the 24*5 global operating model.
  • Identifies and develops talent on the team; focus on having the relevant competencies and skilled developed for new hires in the team.
  • Plans and executes cross training to support critical and short turnaround processes so that client deliverables and SLAs are met.
  • Ensures the team has all the necessary resources and tools needed to perform and meet their goals.
  • Acts as the main point of contact for all team members to raise queries and concerns.
  • Monitors metrics dashboards and ensures all Team Leads are on track with the defined goals/OKRs.
  • Tracks, measures, and reports on agreed daily, monthly, and quarterly metrics to all stakeholders.
  • Provides coaching, mentorship, and training to Team Leads as appropriate and according to the specific needs of the individual’s role and the process.
  • Identifies areas for improvement and scope of automation across all processes and proactively takes steps to encourage and motivate idea generation from teams.
  • Define team strategy and set tactical OKRs based on business goals. Drive successful execution and delivery.
  • Conduct regular team check-ins, performance reviews, and career development planning to build a high-performing team.
  • Foster strong collaboration with data collection, content design, and tech teams to drive operational improvements.
  • Ensure optimal utilization of resources and tools for maximum efficiency and goal achievement.
  • Champion best practice sharing and continuous learning; help team members build deep subject matter expertise.
  • Oversee and manage multiple projects simultaneously, including research, implementation, and communication of new data or methodologies.
  • Stay current with industry regulations and client needs; proactively recommend enhancements based on research and regulatory review.
  • Represent Morningstar as a subject matter expert on managed investment data internally and externally.
  • Collaborate with local and regional teams to align global standards with regional business requirements.
  • Act as a bridge between Research, Data, Technology, and Product teams to ensure seamless execution of complex initiatives.
  • Support and manage technical data requests:
  • Translate business needs for technology partners.
  • Guide product teams on appropriate data access and usage.
  • Define and validate functional requirements with tech stakeholders.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience in the investment data industry, with at least 3 years in a people management role.
  • Deep expertise in investment data and data systems, with a strong understanding of industry standards and practices.
  • Strategic thinker with strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Quick learner, adaptable in fast-paced and evolving environments.
  • Proven ability to build partnerships and collaborate across teams and geographies.
  • Track record of developing talent and building high-performing teams.
  • Experience with multiple data domains (e.g., portfolio data, ESG data) is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree and credentials such as CFA is a must.
  • Familiarity with third-party data vendors and asset management workflows.
  • Experience with process improvement methodologies such as LEAN, Six Sigma, or Agile is a plus.
  • Prior experience using Morningstar’s internal tools (e.g., DataManager, XOI, RDB, TSDB) is a plus.
  • Flexible to work in shifts.
