Job Description
Help build the world's most advanced reinforcement learning platform at Microsoft AI. This role involves designing and developing core infrastructure, focusing on systematizing and extending RL algorithms for LLMs across various environments. Responsibilities include assisting in algorithm development, onboarding team members to advanced techniques, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver new agentic AI product capabilities. The ideal candidate excels in coding, software engineering, API design, machine learning, and thrives in a collaborative environment. They will build robust systems to solve next-generation AI problems and manage multiple responsibilities with shifting priorities. The position requires strong software engineering skills and a demonstrated interest in reinforcement learning and related fields.
Must have:
- Experience in coding (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python)
- Large-scale software systems and infrastructure experience
- Reinforcement learning & language modelling knowledge
- Strong software engineering skills
- Collaborative and adaptable
Good to have:
- Background in scientific computing or machine learning
- Experience with large-scale distributed RL or post-training systems

Responsibilities
- Design and develop the core infrastructure of the RL Platform, focusing on systematizing and extending RL algorithms for LLMs to a variety of present and future environments.
- Assist in development of new algorithms and help onboard other team members to state-of-the-art techniques.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ship new agentic AI product capabilities.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, Mathematics, or related STEM fields and 4 years of experience in coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C , C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience with large-scale software systems and infrastructure.
- Demonstrated interest in reinforcement learning, language modelling, generative modelling, or related domains.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C , C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C , C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Background in scientific computing or machine learning.
- Experience with large scale distributed RL or post-training systems
- Experience with developing software platforms
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
