Job Description

DNEG Animation is seeking a Pipeline Supervisor to lead the development and adoption of pipeline tools, ensuring they meet the needs of various shows while improving overall workflows. The role involves supervising and mentoring Pipeline TDs and ATDs, collaborating with technical and production leadership, and acting as a liaison between shows and the pipeline team. Responsibilities include overseeing tool and workflow development, attending production meetings, and supporting artists in adopting new technologies. The position requires strong technical and interpersonal skills to effectively lead teams and meet project deadlines.
Must have:
  • Supervisory experience in VFX or Animation industry.
  • Strong understanding of the VFX/Animation production process.
  • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent Python and Linux skills.
  • Experience developing tools for DCC packages like Maya.
  • Experience with renderers such as Renderman.
  • Experience with source control systems.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks.

Our Pipeline teams combine a solid understanding of technology with the workflows and processes used by our artists daily. They have a passion for supporting the creative process and for ensuring our global pipeline is as optimal as possible. 
 
As a Pipeline Supervisor, you have overall responsibility for building on the existing pipeline tooling and expanding the capabilities driven by new show requirements. You are responsible for leading the development and adoption of specific and general needs of those shows in collaboration with technical and production leadership. 
 
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Report to the Head of Pipeline
  • Supervise and mentor the Pipeline TDs and ATDs for development projects and support tasks
  • Partner with the Technology Operations Manager who will line manage the TDs. 
  • Oversee and contribute to the pipeline development of tools and workflows.
  • When assigned to a show, ensure that all development efforts meet the needs of the show while also contributing to the overall pipeline 
  • When assigned to shows, attend production meetings as required by the show
  • Participate in task force meetings and problem solving sessions as required
  • Act as the conduit between the show and the pipeline team, striving for the continuous improvement of the workflow and pipeline tooling
  • Supervise support and development requests for the shows 
  • Provide feedback for annual performance reviews and career development for Pipeline TDs and ATDs
  • Adhere to the Pipeline Architect for technical leadership and direction
  • Partner closely with CG Supervisors in assessing and designing new workflow and pipeline tools
  • Foster close collaboration with Technical Supervisors on development projects.
  • Collaborate with peer pipeline supervisors in supervising and mentoring the Pipeline TDs and ATDs
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager, Project Managers and Project Coordinators to scope, develop and deploy development projects and support tasks in a timely manner
  • Support production supervisors, artists and production staff in adopting new technology and techniques 
  • Collaborate with the project managers and the training department to provide and integrate user-friendly documentation and tutorials for new tools and workflows 

 

Must Haves

  • Proven experience at a supervisory/lead level in the Visual effects or Animation industry 
  • Strong understanding of the VFX or Feature Animation production process and the role of the pipeline in delivering high-quality work. 
  • A degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics or another related field or equivalent working experience 
  • Excellent Python and Linux skills 
  • Experience in developing tools for DCC packages such as Maya, Houdini and Nuke 
  • Experience with renderers such as Renderman, Arnold, Mantra
  • Experience with source control systems and team management or development
  • Strong problem solving and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead teams and stakeholders through the development process.
  • Experience in managing and prioritising tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Works well under pressure and critical deadlines
