Microsoft's AI Fundamentals team seeks a Principal Software Engineer to revolutionize its search stack using containerization and Kubernetes. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, reliable solutions on cloud-native technologies. Collaboration with other teams to provide platform tools and services is key. The successful candidate will shape the platform vision, contribute to Bing's evolution as a cloud-native search engine, and work with senior developers on various projects. Responsibilities include designing large-scale distributed software services, collaborating on user requirements, performing system design, and developing high-quality, maintainable code. Troubleshooting, optimization, and improving test coverage are also essential.
Must have:
  • 6+ years experience
  • 5+ years Kubernetes experience

  • 4+ years CI/CD pipeline experience
  • 4+ years experience with continuous deployment and testing
  • Strong coding skills (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python)

Overview

Do you want to join the Microsoft AI Fundamentals team of engineers who are revolutionizing the search stack with containerization? You will embark on a thrilling and rewarding journey that involves creating, testing, and maintaining scalable and reliable solutions that run on Kubernetes and other cloud-native technologies. You will also partner with other teams across MAI to offer them the best platform tools and services to support their applications. You will have the opportunity to shape the MAI platform vision and roadmap and create the future of Bing as a cloud-native search engine.


As a Principal Software Engineer, you will learn from senior developers and cooperate with other team members on various projects. You will also explore cutting-edge technologies and tools that will boost your skills and knowledge. You will be expected to follow best practices, write elegant code, and adhere to coding standards.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years experience with Kubernetes on Azure or other cloud environments such as AWS and GKE
  • 5+ years experience in Infrastructure Management; understanding of managing large-scale infrastructure, including service discovery, ingress, networking and repair mechanisms
  • 4+ years experience in automating deployment processes and managing CI/CD pipelines
  • 4+ years experience with tools and practices that support continuous deployment and testing, as well as configuration management

 

Other Requirements:

Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Cloud like Azure, AWS, GKE, Infrastructure management at scale.

 

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

This is a technical role: it requires hands-on software design and development skills. We’re looking for someone who has a demonstrated history of solving hard technical problems and is motivated to tackle the hardest problems in building a containerization platform at scale using Kubernetes orchestrator.
  • Design and develop large-scale distributed software services and solutions following modern software engineering practices through design and code reviews.
  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a scenario, drive identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Perform system design with well-defined interfaces across multiple components, leveraging data/telemetry to inform decisions.
  • Develop best-in-class engineering for our services, ensuring components are modular, secure, reliable, testable, diagnosable, maintainable, actively monitored, and reusable.
  • Improve test coverage, organize and implement integration tests, and resolve problem areas.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize automation, reliability, and monitoring for Live Site.
