Location: Cambridge, UK – (Remote available within the UK with team onsite days in the Cambridge office approx. 4 times per year)

Are you a highly creative and experienced Concept Artist who thrives on bringing worlds, characters, and creatures to life through stunning visual storytelling?

As a Senior Concept Artist on RuneScape: Dragonwilds, our new open-world survival crafting game currently in early access and developed in Unreal Engine 5, you will play a crucial role in shaping the game’s visual identity.

You’ll work across a broad range of subjects—environments, architecture, props, characters, and creatures—producing benchmark-quality artwork that sets the tone for the entire project. You’ll be responsible for developing visual concepts that inspire the team and help communicate the game’s artistic vision with clarity and style.

This is a hands-on and collaborative role suited to an artist who not only creates stunning visuals but also supports others through mentoring, feedback, and strong organisational skills.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Collaborate closely with the Art Director and Associate Art Director to visualise and evolve the game’s visual direction.
  • Produce high-quality concept art, illustrations, key art, and storyboards that align with the project’s tone and vision.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the product to make informed visual decisions and create contextually relevant artwork.
  • Contribute to visual development efforts across disciplines, supporting brainstorms, pitches, and exploratory initiatives.
  • Review both internal and outsourced artwork, offering clear, constructive feedback to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Mentor and coach junior artists, helping them grow their craft and raise the overall bar for the team.
  • Document production guides and processes that support scalable, repeatable visual standards across the project.
  • Engage in a positive, open studio culture by promoting creativity, team morale, and strong communication.

What we’re looking for:

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality personal and professional work, showcasing a range of styles, subjects, and workflows.
  • Proven ability to design environments, architecture, characters, props, and more, ideally with examples of visual storytelling and key art.
  • Solid understanding of composition, colour theory, design fundamentals, and storytelling through visual media.
  • Creative problem-solver with the ability to work autonomously while aligning with game vision and production requirements.
  • Strong communication and visualisation skills, including process sketches, explorations, and polished presentations.
  • Full proficiency in modern game development software; Maya, Substance, Photoshop, Z-Brush.
  • Knowledge and expertise of the fundamental art principles (colour, composition, value/ lighting, anatomy, form, perspective).
  • Ability to deconstruct, understand and adapt to various art styles replicating them successfully.
  • A deep artistic toolbox with multiple approaches and processes to visual development and problem solving.
  • A strong enthusiasm for games and a deep understanding of game development processes
  • Comfortable reviewing work and providing feedback to outsource partners or freelancers.
