Job Description

Google is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join their BigQuery Migration Service team. The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of experience in software development, with a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms. They will also have experience launching software products, designing and architecting software, managing data lakes and warehouses, and using ETL tools. Experience with OLTP and OLAP database management systems, SQL querying, and Java programming is required. This role will involve building large-scale systems and infrastructure to enable migration to BigQuery and other Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services. The engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, maintaining, and improving software, taking initiative on technical solutions from concept to implementation. They will also collaborate with cross-functional team members and stakeholders to define the goals and scope of the BigQuery and migration assistant product, and lead designs for major software components, systems, and features.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 8 years of experience in software development
  • 5 years of experience launching software products
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture
  • Experience in managing data lakes, warehousing, data migrations and using Extract, transform, and load (ETL) tools to integrate data from multiple sources
  • Experience in working with Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) database management systems
  • Experience in querying and managing datasets using SQL and programming using Java
Good to have:
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction
  • Experience with data migration strategies and moving large-scale production systems either in on-premise/data center environments or migration to cloud scenarios
  • Experience working with services (e.g., Spark, DataFlow/Beam)
  • Experience working with Java or C++
  • Knowledge of private and public cloud design considerations and limitations in the areas of virtualization, global infrastructure, distributed systems, load balancing, networking
