World Relief is seeking an Adult Education Volunteer Coordinator to train, support, supervise, and appreciate volunteers for its Adult Education department. This role involves collaborating with the Adult Education and Church & Volunteer Engagement teams across Chicagoland. Responsibilities include recruiting, training, and placing English tutors and classroom aides, accompanying tutors on initial meetings, administering student tests, supporting volunteers through regular contact and debriefings, participating in volunteer mobilization events, collecting data for grant reporting, and strengthening partnerships with libraries and churches. The position is limited-term until June 30, 2026, contingent on funding.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Adult Education Volunteer Coordinator has the primary responsibility for training, supporting, supervising, and appreciating Adult Education department volunteers, including English tutors, classroom aide volunteers, and other roles related to educational goals, such as Conversation Cafes. This position collaborates closely with the Adult Education department and the Church & Volunteer Engagement teams across the Chicagoland region. The Adult Education Volunteer Coordinator is also responsible for coordinating volunteer-related activities for the World Relief Literacy project. This position oversees all aspects of the Secretary of State Volunteer Literacy Grant.  

This is a limited-term position funded through a grant agreement until June 30, 2026 and contingent upon funding extension.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Recruit, interview, train, and place English tutors, classroom aides, Conversation Café service groups, and other roles within the responsibility of this position.
  • Collaborate with the Adult Education department to ensure training is strong and meets goals for well-equipped volunteers to support the needs of English classes and students effectively. 
  • Accompany in-home tutors on the first meeting with their English student or refugee family to facilitate the introduction and provide clear expectations to both parties.   
  • Complete pre-tests and post-tests for any students seeking tutoring if not already completed by the Adult Education staff team. 
  • Support volunteers throughout their service experience, including intentional check-in and debrief meetings, encouraging volunteer retention to continue serving and deepen the volunteer partnership with World Relief. 
  • Maintain regular e-mail, phone, or face-to-face contact with volunteers to provide guidance and build the partnership relationship, including sending a monthly informational email. 
  • Participate in volunteer mobilization efforts and events, in collaboration with the broader external engagement team, typically once/month.   
  • Collect and record accurate volunteer and student data and paperwork as required by World Relief and the Secretary of State. 
  • Contribute to all Secretary of State grant reports and application, in conjunction with the Adult Education department and Grants Management team. 
  • Participate as a member of the Church & Volunteer Mobilization and Adult Education teams in regular meetings and events. 
  • Strengthen partnerships with local libraries and partner churches to build stronger co-ownership of education programming, alongside the Adult Education team.

  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills as this role plays an integral part between the Church & Volunteer Engagement and Adult Education teams

  • Periodic evening and weekend availability required for attending volunteer introduction meetings, trainings, and external events   

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to train and educate adult learners about cross-cultural relationships and dynamics   
  • Demonstrated ability to mobilize, convene, motivate, coach, and facilitate individuals and groups toward a common purpose 
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/spoken communication skills   
  • Excellent problem solving and planning abilities, and a willingness to analyze and adapt processes to better achieve goals   
  • A self-starter with strong initiative, follow-through, and organizational skills; must be able to prioritize, multi-task, and be attentive to details   
  • Familiarity and ease of use in basic computer programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point, databases); other design/marketing skills a plus   
  • Knowledge of World Relief
