Job Description

ByteDance seeks a Privacy Counsel for APAC & Emerging Markets to provide data privacy legal support across 120+ markets. Responsibilities include reviewing new product launches, conducting privacy impact assessments, advising on data protection, monitoring privacy trends, coordinating internal communications, identifying areas for improvement, developing standards and policies, merging solutions across jurisdictions, and advising on AI-related matters. The ideal candidate will be qualified to practice law in a common law jurisdiction, have significant experience in global data privacy, be detail-oriented, a strong problem-solver, and fluent in English. Experience with major multinational corporations or advising agencies on data privacy issues is required.

Responsibilities

Our legal team provides key support for all ByteDance’s innovative initiatives, state-of-the-art products, and integrated platforms servicing our global video market. We help our technological and business teams enable their vision by providing integrated legal guidance and support. The ByteDance team is growing fast and is seeking highly experienced, bright and capable legal professionals to join the team. One of the critical challenges is the need for our team to provide exceptional legal support for the Data Privacy and Data Protection matters involving ByteDance. The following describes the responsibilities and requirements for the role. Responsibilities: - Provide data privacy legal support in the APAC and Emerging Markets (AEM) region with a focus on reviewing new product and feature launches across the entire company and in over 120+ markets. This will include advising on privacy impact assessments, data protection impact assessments, formulating strategic positions across markets, liaising with product and engineering teams, et cetera. - Monitor privacy across markets to determine trends and issues for the company to address. - Coordinate internal communication, projects, and training amongst different teams. - Identify areas of common concern, redundancies in operation, and inefficiencies in order to develop standards and policies to improve workflow in the region. - Plan any other required activities so international and regional legal teams can meet their objectives and provide actionable deliverables to the company at large. - Merge solutions across key jurisdictions and their legal requirements with a focus on AEM but should have a foundational knowledge of other global laws (i.e. GDPR, CCPA, et cetera). - Increasingly advise on algorithmic and artificial intelligence-related matters.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - Qualified to practice law and in good standing in Singapore, US, UK, or other common law jurisdiction. - Significant experience managing privacy legal and regulatory matters - Experience working on data privacy efforts globally/regionally for a major multinational corporation or advising agency on data privacy issues. - Detail-oriented that can coordinate across multiple teams/countries. - Strong sense of problem-solving and proactive work ethic. - Determination to face tough challenges in a fast-paced environment while keeping a sense of humor. - Fluency in written and spoken English. Preferred Qualifications - Internationally recognized data privacy certifications or courses would be advantageous. - Demonstrated ability to lead / manage data privacy efforts globally / regionally - Experience, and more importantly personal interest, in technology, social network, internet, and all things digital is ideal. - Experience with analyzing products to determine their compliance with applicable data protection regulations and principles. #LI-Hybrid
