Job Description

As a Technical Applications Scientist at Illumina, you will provide support to customers and colleagues on Illumina's products, specifically bead array and Next Generation Sequencing. You will be in a Hub & Hybrid role with travel to the Europe Head Office based in Cambridge, United Kingdom expected twice a week. The role involves triaging, troubleshooting, and resolving customer technical questions and problems. You will also collaborate with colleagues to ensure efficient and timely support for customers, including analyzing their data and providing technical guidance. You will work closely with Sales and Marketing, QA/QC, and R&D to address customer concerns.
Must have:
  • PhD/MSc or BSc in molecular biology, genetics or similar.
  • Troubleshooting experience on gene expression analysis, genotyping, NGS, molecular biology or similar.
  • Experience of data analysis with Illumina software or similar.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills required.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication and training skills a must.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook required.
  • Must be very detail oriented with demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
Good to have:
  • Biotech experience preferred with previous experience in a direct external customer support role.
  • Experience with sequencing technology.
  • Customer facing role in sales or support.

Technical Applications Scientist – Hybrid Illumina are a Global Biotechnology company and we are currently looking for the best, customer focused Technical Applications Scientists to join our mission, to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome. ​As a product expert, you will provide support to customers and colleagues on Illumina's products; bead array and Next Generation Sequencing. By joining Illumina as Technical Applications Scientist, you will be in a Hub & Hybrid role with travel to the Europe Head Office based in Cambridge UK expected twice a week, you will work in collaboration and in scientific discussion which will enable our customers’ success across the Europe region. Why You You will have a keen interest and experience in supporting customers and providing the best levels of technical customer support possible.  You will be a fast learner, quick worker and have excellent analytical, problem-solving and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex technical information effectively to your customers.  You will come from a molecular biology or genetics background and be passionate about supporting and advising our customers on Illumina products and applications. Responsibilities will include:
  • Professionally, efficiently and conclusively triage, troubleshoot and resolve customer technical questions and problems
  • Log and manage customer issues using Illumina’s issue-tracking database
  • Troubleshoot a variety of issues related to Illumina’s products under limited instruction
  • Keen interest in learning about our sequencer portfolio and its integration in different pipelines.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure efficient and timely support for our customers
  • Provide and assist customers with the analysis of their data
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with customers
  • Triage and dispatch issues requiring field support to Field Service Engineers and Field Applications Scientists when appropriate
  • Provide technical guidance regarding the choice and use of the appropriate Illumina product to existing and prospective customers
  • Working closely with Sales and Marketing, QA/QC, and R&D to address customer concerns, determine corrective action and customer follow-up
  • As part of the Technical Support Team, located in the Illumina Centre UK, you will collaborate with colleagues and other teams to offer the level and quality of support our customers expect
Preferred Educational and Experience Background:
  • PhD/MSc or BSc in molecular biology, genetics or similar.
  • Troubleshooting experience on gene expression analysis, genotyping, NGS, molecular biology or similar
  • Experience of data analysis with Illumina software or similar.
  • Experience of using Illumina products
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills required
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication and training skills a must
  • Experience working in any service role desired
  • Teaching experience desirable
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook required
  • Must be very detail oriented with demonstrated ability to learn quickly
It would be brilliant (but not necessary) if you also have:
