The Backend Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable and high-performance backend services using Java, Spring Boot preferred. They will architect and manage cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), implement RESTful APIs, and contribute to a robust microservices architecture. The role also involves optimizing backend systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and applying best practices in software engineering and DevOps. The candidate will need to stay current with emerging backend and cloud technologies.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re seeking a skilled Backend Engineer with strong experience in Java (Spring Boot preferred) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). While this role focuses on backend development, experience with frontend technologies like React is highly desirable. If you're comfortable navigating both backend and frontend, even better—but backend expertise is what we need most right now.
The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex technical challenges, writing clean and scalable code, and working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable and high-performance backend services using Java (Spring Boot preferred).
- Architect and manage cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
- Implement RESTful APIs and contribute to a robust microservices architecture.
- Optimise backend systems for performance, security, and scalability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and deliver backend solutions, while supporting frontend needs when necessary.
- Apply best practices in software engineering, testing, DevOps, and continuous delivery.
- Monitor, debug, and improve application performance and reliability in a cloud-native environment.
- Stay current with emerging backend and cloud technologies to inform tech decisions.
OUR SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
- Strong proficiency in Java, with hands-on experience in Spring Boot.
- Solid understanding of microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, and database management (SQL/NoSQL).
- Experience working with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), particularly deploying and managing applications on GKE.
- Proficiency with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with authentication and security protocols (e.g., OAuth, JWT).
- Exposure to cloud monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Stackdriver, Prometheus)
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS
- Experience with JavaScript and modern frontend frameworks like React.
- Interest or experience in contributing to frontend development when needed.
- Knowledge of Node.js or PHP
