Job Description

As a Data Center Technician at Google, you'll install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain server hardware and software within Google's data centers. Responsibilities include working with servers, components, networks, routers, hubs, switches, and networking protocols. You'll participate in projects, develop contingency plans, and handle physical installation of racks. Troubleshooting critical technical issues, testing new hardware and designs, and configuring Linux OS are key aspects of the role. The position requires working non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays. The role involves manual work and requires fluency in English.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Troubleshooting OS, hardware, or networking
  • Linux/Unix experience (LPIC preferred)
  • Ability to work non-standard hours
  • Server and network hardware maintenance
  • Troubleshooting using Linux tools
Good to have:
  • Data center/network operations experience
  • Networking knowledge (topology, protocols)

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols.
  • Experience with LPIC or working with Linux (e.g., Red Hat, Slackware, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo), Unix (e.g., Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, BSD), or other similar Operating Systems.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including working weekends, holidays and on shift-based schedule as required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in maintenance of server systems.
  • Experience working within a data center or network operation center environment.
  • Experience with troubleshooting hardware and network issues using Linux tools.
  • Knowledge of Networking, topology and protocol.
  • Ability to communicate in English fluently to liaise with the professional working environment.

About the job

Google isn't just a software company. The Hardware Operations team is responsible for monitoring the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure behind Google's powerful search technology. As an Operations Technician, you'll install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware (like servers and its components) and server software (like Google's Linux cluster). You'll also take on the configuration of more complex components such as networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches and networking protocols. You'll participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks, and while it can sometimes be physically demanding, you are excited to work with infrastructure that is at the cutting-edge of computer technology.
