The Director of Communications, Labor, Legal & Security at The New York Times will be responsible for developing cohesive strategic communications approaches for labor relations, legal, and security portfolios. This role involves creating long-term campaigns, developing rapid response materials, collaborating with various stakeholders, preparing internal and external communications plans, and managing executive communications strategies regarding labor relations. The director will develop core strategic messaging, ensuring consistency across communications teams and demonstrating support for journalistic independence. The role requires exceptional writing and editing skills, along with experience in stakeholder management and supporting senior executives during high-profile communications moments.

About the Role

To help us do this essential work, The NY Times is hiring a Director of Communications, Labor, Legal and Security to ensure we have cohesive strategic communications approaches to our labor relations and internally facing legal and security communications portfolios. We are looking for a communications professional who has experience working with a broad range of stakeholders to develop communications strategies and plans on labor issues at major brands, and who have experience communicating legal and security objectives to employees. You have direct experience creating compelling long-term campaigns and developing rapid response communications materials in a matrixed organization.

You will work in partnership with leaders across the company and you will report to the SVP of External Communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Labor Communications in collaboration with senior stakeholders in Legal, Investor Relations, H.R., Finance,  and Communications you will own the Labor Relations communications portfolio, preparing and delivering long term internal and external communications plans, mapping together a holistic approach for communicating with managers, union and non-union represented colleagues at the company and developing relevant messages by audience.
  • Internal Communications in  collaboration with the VP of Employee Engagement and Experience Communications and other stakeholders, you will develop and execute on employee-facing communications strategies, and support day-to-day internal comms needs for our security and legal teams, in order to build understanding, trust and engagement.
  • Executive Communications in collaboration with senior leadership, you will develop a comprehensive executive communications strategy and messaging with regard to labor relations, creating talking points, drafting communications for email and other outlets and providing regular messaging guidance to senior leaders, including making recommendations and advising decisions.
  • Rapid Response and Media Relations In collaboration with the SVP for External Communications, you will work with a rapid response team to help with the management of new issues around labor relations, security and labor matters, articulate and advocate for a course of action, and prepare for issues before they happen.
  • Messaging in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Messaging, you will develop core strategic messaging and the messaging strategy for The New York Times around labor relations – and to a lesser extent, security and legal matters – ensuring that the messaging approach aligns with our strategy and maintaining messaging consistency across the communications teams working on this portfolio.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years experience working in communications, with a primary preference for a background in labor relations; background in security and/or legal comms preferred, too
  • 10+ years experience supporting senior executives during high profile communications moments, from planning to execution.
  • Stakeholder management skills, with experience developing agreement on a strategic point of view across a diverse and matrixed organization.
  • You have exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$145,000 - $165,000 USD
