This role involves leading the development and implementation of camera actuator firmware and control systems for Google Pixel products. Responsibilities include defining calibration strategies, optimizing performance, troubleshooting control system failures, and mitigating power, vibration, and thermal issues. Collaboration with hardware, module, reliability, and software teams is crucial. The ideal candidate will have experience with linear and nonlinear control systems design, microcontroller design, and automation of measurement procedures and data analysis. The position requires working with internal and external teams to advance camera actuator control design and ensure industry-leading AF/OIS capabilities.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • 2 years camera control system firmware development experience
  • Experience with linear and nonlinear control systems design
  • Experience with microcontrollers and driver ICs
  • Calibration and compensation strategies expertise
Good to have:
  • Master's/PhD degree
  • 10 years industry experience
  • Experience with Python, Java, C, C++ or embedded programming languages
  • Experience with Matlab, Simulink, or ANSYS Maxwell
  • Experience with test equipment

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aero Engineering, Physics, or relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience working in camera control system firmware development.
  • Experience with linear and nonlinear control systems design, for electronic and electromechanical systems with microcontrollers, driver ICs, calibration and compensation strategies.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aero Engineering, Physics, or relevant field.
  • 10 years of industry experience.
  • Experience coding practices in Python, Java, C, C++ or embedded programming languages.
  • Experience in microcontroller design, development and PID control design.
  • Experience with Matlab, Simulink, or ANSYS Maxwell with Twin Builder for multi-physics modeling and simulation and with test equipment such as dynamic signal analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

The Camera Hardware team inside the Tech Engineering Imaging and Vision (TEIV) group is responsible for developing camera hardware for all Google’s Pixel products. In this role, you will work with internal cross-functional teams and external partners to design and develop camera components, modules, and integrate them into product systems. You will have the responsibility of the entire life-cycle of projects including new technology and roadmap products.

In this role as an actuator Control Systems expert, you will lead the development and implementation of camera actuator firmware and control systems. You will be responsible for defining calibration strategies and optimizing performance, ensuring industry-leading AF/OIS capabilities. Your expertise will be critical in troubleshooting control system failures and mitigating power, vibration, and thermal issues. You will collaborate closely with hardware, module, reliability, and software teams to integrate and advance actuator technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Work separately with internal cross-functional teams and external partners to develop camera actuator control systems and firmware.
  • Conduct thorough actuator AF/OIS failure analysis and drive effective corrective actions with a sense of urgency.
  • Conduct automation of measurement procedures and data analysis (e.g. Matlab, Python.)
  • Verify control system performance and efficiency.
  • Lead and collaborate with technology partners and vendors to advance camera actuator control design.
