As a Senior R&D Engineer, you will be responsible for applying electromagnetic design principles to the development and maintenance of superconducting MRI magnet products. Your role involves participating in multidisciplinary project teams throughout the product development lifecycle, including concept design, risk analysis, and design reviews. You will design primary magnetic field producing coils, analyze field uniformity, and design passive magnetic field shim systems and quench protection systems. You will also conduct detailed design, analysis, and testing of magnet components, manage engineering design changes, and ensure successful execution of innovative designs. You should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and be able to provide technical leadership in ambiguous situations.
Must have:
  • 5+ years of electromagnetic analysis & design experience.
  • Experience in superconducting magnet design and operation.
  • Experience with modeling and analyzing electrical circuits.
Good to have:
  • Experience with magnetic materials.
  • Ability to write your own software (C++, C#).

Senior R&D Engineer, Magnetics

In this role, you will focus primarily on the application of electromagnetic design principles to the development and maintenance of superconducting MRI magnet products and technologies.

Your role:

  • Participates in multidisciplinary project teams through all phases of product development to ensure successful execution of innovative and best-in-class designs. This includes interpretation and flow-down of system requirements to sub-systems and components, concept design, technical risk analysis, and design review.
  • Design of primary magnetic field producing coils and analysis of field uniformity using spherical harmonics.
  • Designs and analyzes passive magnetic field shim systems and quench protection systems.
  • Conducts detailed design, analysis, and testing of magnet components including eddy current analysis and calculation of magnetic forces.
  • Manages engineering design changes including revising and reviewing drawings and bills of material.

You're the right fit if:

  • You’ve acquired 5+ years of practical electromagnetic analysis & design experience, as well as superconducting magnet design and operation, superconducting magnet component design; superconductor fundamentals and a demonstrated use of magnetic materials to shape magnetic fields.
  • Your skills include demonstrated experience modeling and analyzing electrical circuits, knowledge of Maxwell’s Equations, use of advanced electromagnetic design tools (Opera 2D and 3D, ANSYS Maxwell, HFSS, Remcom, CST; ability or willingness to learn to write your own software (C++, C#), preferably in a modern scripting language such as Python or Matlab. Basic understanding of GD&T ASME Y14.5.
  • You have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in physics or a related engineering discipline.
  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position
  • You’re an excellent communicator with written and verbal skills, strong analytical and problem-solving skills that will provide technical leadership in ambiguous situations

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

Philips Transparency Details

The pay range for this position in Latham, NY is $ 124,500 to $199,200.00 .

The actual base pay offered may vary within the posted ranges depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.    

In addition, other compensation, such as an annual incentive bonus, sales commission or long-term incentives may be offered.  Employees are eligible to participate in our comprehensive Philips Total Rewards benefits program, which includes a generous PTO, 401k (up to 7% match), HSA (with company contribution), stock purchase plan, education reimbursement and much more.  Details about our benefits can be found here
