  • Experience with JS build tooling
  • Experience with Node.js and GraphQL
  • 2+ years of full stack web application development

About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

The New York Times is looking for a senior front end developer to join the Messaging UI team within the Messaging Platforms group. As part of the Messaging Platforms group, your work will directly help grow customer acquisition, engagement, and reader loyalty. You’ll help extend the CMS and administrative consoles that allow newsroom editors to create newsletters and push notifications. You will work closely with other engineers, designers, and product managers. You’ll be a member of an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning.

This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

Responsibilities:

  • Help lead in the effort to modernize and expand our existing front-end tools to support messaging-related workflows for internal newsroom users.
  • Provide front-end expertise, coaching and support to a growing team
  • Develop in an environment that uses React and Redux for much of our front-end development and Go for the backend.
  • Contribute to the full development lifecycle of our products, performing activities related to design, testing, deployment, and on-going support of our systems and capabilities. 
  • Maintain code quality through static analysis, unit and system tests. 
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters and reports to the Engineering Manager over our Messaging Tools team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with modern frontend web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, web performance, accessibility) and best practices
  • Expertise with one or more front-end frameworks (React preferred), and with general patterns and practices related to working with these technologies (Redux, CSS modules, etc)
  • Experience with JS build tooling such as yarn, pnpm, turborepo, lerna, nx, webpack, or babel
  • Experience with Node.js and GraphQL
  • 2+ years of experience in full stack web application development, including proficiency with back-end languages (Go preferred) and SQL

Preferred Qualifications:

  • You have worked with Kubernetes
  • You have worked with Docker and CI/CD systems such as Drone or Jenkins
  • Experience building, operating, and monitoring web systems in GCP or AWS

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$140,000$155,000 USD
