Position at DNEG
Reporting to the Global Head of Character, the Character Supervisor would oversee the artistic and technical development of creatures at DNEG across multiple shows bridging the gap between concept and production.
Working alongside show supervisors, discipline experts & the art dept, the Character Supervisor would be responsible for setting a new artistic standard for character work at DNEG, carrying a continuous artistic and technical vision in line with DNEG technical standards.
The Character Supervisor would work closely with the Art Director, VFX Supervisor & Head of Character to make sure that character’s work from concept art to shots.
Key Responsibilities
Establish a clear process for developing creatures at DNEG
Work with department HOD’s and training team to spearhead the growth of an in-house specialist creature team
Manage a team of specialist department leads/supervisors
Oversight of design and functional anatomy of hero characters
Train and direct members of the character team in DNEG best practice.
Interpret client concepts as they come through the door to establish form and viability, before passing onto our creature supervision team
Work with our show supervisors, advising on creative and technical development of individual assets
Act as a link between all involved departments, ensuring clear communication and common methodology to all character work at DNEG
Responsible for making sure character work at DNEG hits the visual bar whilst promoting smooth workflows and consistency between departments
Define with production and character team members to set clear goals and visual milestones
Working with the art, bidding and supervision teams to help sell and explain early work to our clients
Actively support DNEG pitch team to promote character work
Must Haves
Broad understanding of the processes needed to bring a character to life
Passionate understanding of anatomy
Working knowledge of high-end film pipelines, specifically around 3d modelling, surfacing and rigging
Collaborative attitude, ability to delegate and take feedback from clients
Be proactive and motivated, ability to push the DNEG’s character work to create a higher calibre of asset creation in a clear streamlined fashion
Experience in leading a specialist team
Be a considerate listener and mentor

Please note that this is a unionized position and will be covered by a collective agreement between DNEG and IATSE, in the coming months. As a unionized employee, you will be required to join the union and will benefit from the conditions set out in the collective agreement. Union dues will be required once the collective agreement is in place.
The base salary range for this full-time position is $145,000 to $185,000. DNEG salary ranges are determined by function, department, level and location. An individual's pay within a given range is determined by their transferrable or job-related skills and work experience. Salary ranges are modified from time to time based on external market data collected through our third-party surveys.
