Job Details

Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with 283 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

We are seeking a seasoned bilingual (English & Japanese) copywriter to join the Product Discovery and Promotion team and help bring Japanese content to members around the world. The ideal candidate is a skilled writer and editor with a strong knowledge of Japanese entertainment. We’re particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in entertainment, product writing, and content design. Please note that a writing exercise will be part of the application process.

Your Day-to-Day
You’ll oversee title-related copy, such as synopses, supplemental messages, and other related writing on the Netflix product experience. You'll work closely with a network of agencies and entertainment writers across the globe to deliver compelling copy on titles that connect users to the content they love.
You’ll apply your writing expertise and passion to cross-functional innovation projects, collaborating with visual promotions, analysis, localization, design, and product teams.
You’ll collaborate with the APAC Managing Editor to ensure that local writing needs are adequately represented and addressed, whether by allocating resources for specific expertise or by creating guidelines that cater to regional sensitivities or standards. Together, you’ll ensure best-in-class writing quality and make sure that external resources have access to relevant information, providing editorial guidance for priority titles. You’ll also collaborate closely with other stakeholders to gather insight on Netflix's original language content and support the writing efforts to bring this content to a global audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Align with stakeholders on creative briefs to ideate, oversee, and/or execute copy for high-priority titles on the service

  • Collaborate with creative teams on positioning Netflix series on the product

  • Gather context from key stakeholders to create and supervise creative briefs for external writing vendors

  • Contribute to innovation initiatives and give feedback to continuously improve writing tools and workflow

  • Share context around specific market needs and initiatives with cross-functional partners and Managing Editors—this includes presentations, regular syncs with partners, etc.

  • Work with the Managing Editor to continuously update documentation for writing standards and quality control, including sensitive language style guides, regional workflow, etc.

  • Audit and provide feedback on writing tasks. This includes regularly reviewing synopses and other relevant writing tasks, completing scorecards, providing meaningful and actionable feedback to partners, and escalating concerns as needed

  • Interpret and analyze data on writing tasks to deeply understand local and regional member preferences and develop creative hypotheses based on obtained insight

What Will Help You Succeed

  • Deep content and cultural knowledge about Japanese entertainment. Simply put, you’re a superfan who’s excited to write about our shows — and can help members around the globe get excited about them too

  • Experience and comfort collaborating with multifaceted digital production teams

  • A love of language and writing. Even though you’re an expert with deep knowledge, you’ll always write with an empathetic understanding of a broader audience in mind. You must be comfortable with rigorous editing, managing tight deadlines, and workshopping copy with a team of writers and editors

  • Flexibility and versatility as a writer. Whether the assignment at hand is a synopsis for a human drama series or isekai anime, you understand that different types of content should have copy tailored to their respective tones

  • An exceptional collaborator, with a deep commitment to our team’s core values, like candid feedback, passion, and curiosity

  • A clear communicator who can thoroughly explain editorial decisions to key local stakeholders and address feedback

  • Experience with creating at scale and working with outsourcing models and proprietary tools

  • Innovative thinking. We’re looking for someone who’s constantly looking for ways to improve the member experience through experimentation and testing

Key Qualifications

  • Deep experience in writing and editing in creative spaces, such as consumer-focused copywriting, scriptwriting, or entertainment journalism

  • Comprehensive expertise in Japanese entertainment and anime, with a strong understanding of local trends and key talent names, including cast and creators

  • Familiarity with cultural and regional sensitivities

  • Research skills to help you gather context about titles and quickly synthesize information from a variety of sources

  • Proven stakeholder management skills

  • Collaborative and self-motivated working style

  • Mastery of AP style

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Outstanding communication skills

  • Native fluency in Japanese (reading, speaking, and writing) and full professional fluency in English
